If I want to apply to CALS next year (current Junior living in New England), will priority/preference be given to New York residents over me? (As long as those new york residents have the proper credentials of course).

Thanks.

No, NY residents get a discount in tuition but not priority in acceptance.

If their parents own a NY farm which works with Cornell Co Operative Extension they have a big “hook” for admit into CALS…

Do you think students who attended Ithaca High and then TC3 (Local community college) have an edge (whether slight or significant) in transferring, in the same way that Ithaca High students seem to have an edge for regular admissions?

CALS takes a lot of transfers, the majority of which are from NY State Junior Colleges.

There’s no priority given to NY residents.

Correct me if I’m wrong, I heard there is school (I can’t remember which one) in Cornell is a State-funded school. So they will give priority to NY residents.

Not priority in admission… but it will be cheaper for NYers.

Tovani, yeah, this is one of the “Contract” schools. But according to people here they don’t give priority in admission.

There is a disproportionate number of students from NY in the contract colleges, especially in the transfer classes. I would argue that they do give preference to NYS residents. The numbers are statistically significant even if you account for the larger number of applicants from NYS due to the reduced tuition.

It’s true. According to http://admissions.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/Intro%20toTransfer%20guide%202012.pdf , 36.7% of admitted transfers are from NY. Not sure if they’re all in contracted colleges through.

But for undergraduate admissions, would that really matter? What is the proportion of NYS students admitted as first years?

I just think that the reason why there’s a lot of NY admits is probably because there are A LOT of NYers applying to those contract colleges.

CALS does not give priority to state residents, unless, as mentioned earlier, you’re family works a farm. The reason why there are so many NYS residents in CALS is because there are so many NYS residents who apply.
