I'm planning on applying to Caltech EA.

I have had a VERY rough start to my senior year. I legit failed my Calc BC test and I will have to drop Linear Algebra/Differential Equations. I still think there is room for improvement. You see, I've NEVER failed a test, however my other years were different. I had many science classes and I would cram and easily get a 90+ on the test the next day. You can't do that for college or if you are taking like 4-5 math classes.

So my question is, will Caltech ask for my first marking period grades for senior year? Three marking periods make up a semester at my school. I think I can improve if they see my grades later on (after first semester, which is mid February), but first marking period is just unfair to me.

Does your school report all three marking periods on your transcript? If so, Caltech will see them. If not, then no. At my school, only the final semester grade was reflected on transcripts, as it was what was used to calculate GPA. I would’ve been in the same boat as you if they’d reported three grades per semester (failed a math test in the beginning and brought the grade up by the end).

No, on the final transcript, there is only the final grade you got for the class. I mean, what my GC told me was that some schools like Harvard would definitely ask to see the first marking period, if you apply early. The semester ends in February. I’m not sure if senior year grades are sent in after first semester from my school.

Caltech specifically asks for your midyear report (first semester grades) I believe. I have never heard of them asking to see the first marking period, and I would be very surprised if this happened, since not all high schools would have this information available.

strange that you’re taking BC at the same time as linear algebra/ODEs.

I’ve done so badly on the first test for both classes that if I work extremely hard I’ll be lucky if I get a B+/A- at the end of the semester. I’m taking linear algebra/diff. equations with multivariable, calc bc, and physics c, so if I can manage to stay on top of my game, I’ll be fine. If I don’t, I’m screwed and I’ll literally FAIL most of my classes.

hmm, that’s bizarre. 99.999% of the time multivariable, linear algebra and ODE require a year of calculus as a prerequisite. just thought that was odd

Wait would Caltech mind if they saw a grade of an 85-92 as my final grade for Calc BC or Linear Algebra? Because, based on my first test, that really is the best that I will be able to do. There’s a chance that my avg for the first semester will be a 90 flat if I do well. My unweighted GPA right now is 94ish.

why are you overloading yourself with math? I just think it is a bad idea to take Calc BC, Multi, Ling Alg, and Diff Eq at the same time. I don’t go to Caltech but I think you have plenty of opportunities to take math classes there.
