I am studying abroad next fall, so I won't be applying for housing for the Fall 2014 semester. What I am supposed to do is just apply for spring semester housing in November 2014. But the thought just occurred to me: is it a possibility that there won't be any dorms available, and I will be forced to live off-campus? This is not really an option because my aid is entirely merit-based (don't even come close to applying for need-based), so if I moved off campus I would lose some of that aid.

I will ask Housing when I get back to campus in a few weeks, but I just thought I'd see if anyone here knew the answer to this.

Torchwood- I don’t know for sure but I would guess that just as many students study abroad in the Spring…so those that return from Fall abroad take the on-campus housing of those leaving. Just to put your mind at ease, though, I would contact housing when you return in a week or so…good luck and enjoy your study abroad experience!

Unless I’m mistaken, merit scholarships are not lowered when students decide to live off campus. Unless you get into a situation where your housing/tuition expense is lower then your scholarship amount, I don’t think it will change, and in that case it’s not a problem.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but I don’t think you will have any problem even if you do have to live off campus.

That said, I’m sure there will be an on campus option anyway. There are always a few housing changes and openings over break.

Back in my day (1986) you had to live on campus all four years…now it is just the first two. But that leads me to believe that there is not a housing shortage at Case and you would be fine. But ask Housing and/or the Co-op office.

I found this on the housing website: “For an undergraduate student, living off campus will change the budget used to calculate your financial aid package. If you are receiving any grant money in your package, living off campus could affect the amount you receive.”

But I suppose my merit scholarship isn’t based on financial need so maybe you are right frenchhornaddict.
