I posted this on the SAT subforum, but I was hoping to get some more views here... if that is against CC policy feel free to remove it...

Soooo...

During the test on Saturday I was keeping my friends phone in my lunch bag because he did not bring any container to store it. So at the very start of the first section it occurred to me that he may have forgotten to turn it off, so as I reached into my bag to examine the phone, the proctor saw me with my hand on the phone and my eyes looking down at it... She never said anything about it and maybe did not even see, but I am worried they may suspect foul play.

When can I determine if I am safe or not? The dang phone was off by the way...

wow. Tough dilemna. You could call in (either to the proctor or the college board) and ask if you were reported, but then they’d definitely know you looked at your phone. Or you could wait it out, hope for the best, and not have an opportunity to explain it if you were reported. I’d think if you get your score in the mail and nothing else you’d start to be in the clear.

I agree, you’re being paranoid. If you were a proctor, what would you think the student was perusing in a lunch bag which would help him/her on the SATs?

A quick reminder of the pythagorean theorem? The definition of the word erudite? How could you possibly prepare such a cheat sheet for the SATs?

If the phone were sitting on your neighbor’s SAT answer sheet, and you peered over to look at it to make sure it was turned off, then I might share your concern, because it would appear that you were copying. But staring at something in your lunch bag *while taking the SATs *doesn’t suggest cheating to me.

At my SAT in March, a kid was suspected of cheating. During the middle of a CR section, another proctor who had been radioed in barged into the testing room and actually forced the kid to walk out of the test, right then and there…as the rest of us innocents watched in horror (and wasted precious time). I’m guessing your proctor didn’t care enough to force you to quit right there, so I’d guess that you’ll be okay.

Yes, you may be suspected of cheating. Knowing rules, raising your hand and alarming teacher about your situation ( or make it a short story and ask for bag to be removed from classroom or something…) I’m sure everything would have been okay.
