Does checking ASIAN give you a disadvantage?

I know that recently, the UCs are cutting down on the acceptance rate of Asians because they already have many asians. But for other schools (non-Ivy), does it affect you chance of admissions?
For example, one school I’m applying to is 10% asian. I’m Chinese, so I marked the Asian box. Also, I said that my first language was Cantonese (b/c well, it is)… Does that help/harm my admissions?

well..UC's cant used race as admission factors. Don't worry. Check it off. It won't make a huge difference even if they find out. People here believe being asian is going to kill you and will make you go to a community college. Wrong. If you got the grade, ec's, sat's, etc. u are good. But, if it was between a URM and an asian, the URM will definitely win. But don't worry.

Can you provide real evidence that the UCs are cutting down on the acceptance rate of Asians, or is this one of those "grapevine" things because your friend's cousin knows this guy whose neighbor's friend didn't get into UCLA because he was Asian (supposedly)? If not, I say check it off. Your chance is equal to all other non-URMs because it's the status quo, damn it! If the UCs were creditably lowering Asian admissions then the public outcry would certainly span a greater radius than outside the College Confidential forums.

Flopsy, you are the bomb. MVP of CC

It is against the law to make any kind of racial quotas however race may be A factor not THE factor for admission. How they do it is you get points for different things: SAT scores, ECs, race, etc. As you can imagine white people don't get any points for race. The reason asians don't get as many or any points is because the ratio of asian seniors graduating from local highschools to asian seniors enrolled in the UCs shows that they are not under-represented. The idea is to help out the people who for some reason can't help themselves not the people who already seem to be doing fine (not without a lot of hard work mind you) even if their skin isn't white. This is pretty much the same for all the top universities. In order for being asian to be a plus you have to apply somwhere no other asians want to go. I wouldn't worry because things like your scores and GPA are worth way more than race. The only issue would be if they were deciding between you and an URM with the exact same amount of points for everything else. People who perpetuate the "they didn't take me cause im not black" theory are just whining about not getting in.
