Well Columbia's stance on the SAT is "Send us all your scores and we'll take the highest (mix-match)".

Well I just received my SAT that I took for the 3rd time today, and it's a very depressing situation. I got even worst than my first time.

First time (Jan): 1830
Second (Jun): 1890 (I improved in all 3 areas)
Third (Nov): 1770 (Dropped in Reading and Math...writing stayed the same)

I was pretty sure I would do horrible the third time since I had a severe fever, but since I applied ED I knew Nov. would be the last time to improve my SAT score. SO I took it anyways.

I sent Columbia today explaining such...even tough they still didn't reply, I really can't expect them to believe such a thing (even though I could prove it), since anyone that did bad could say that.

So my question is will Columbia truly just consider your highest?

I mean...there must be a reason why they want ALL the scores...perhaps to see if you were improving or becoming worst.

So what's the situation?

P.S.: Yes I have to send all 3 since I wrote on commonapp that Im taking it in Nov.

Yes, I am aware of that. 1890 would put me in the bottom 20%-25% of people accepted. However, because it is already on the bottom line, I didn’t want anything to make my scenario worst…that’s why I’m worried about this.

I may be alone, but I would advise against violating their explicit instructions. They ask for all your scores; if you’re going to lie to them, why should they even bother to look at your application? They say they will only look at your superscore, and since you have to trust them with so much else, I’d trust them on this.

To be brutally honest, I think your chances of admission with just your first two scores were slim to begin with. I don’t think your third score will hurt your chances anymore than the damage already done by your first two scores. If I were you, I would definitely get cracking on my other applications.

Sorry these words are so harsh, but if I were in your position, I would rather someone give me straightforward advice so that I could work on applying to other great schools as soon as possible.

To answer your question directly, I don’t think your third score will harm you. If they say they take into consideration only your superscore, we have to just believe them.

I’m pretty sure Columbia almost blindly super-scores unless you took the SAT 4-5 times. 2-3 is acceptable, with 3 being the upper limit, they will take the best on each section from all three attempts and add that together to get a super-score. I’m guessing your best CR + best Math + best writing is in the low 1900s? if this is true, you are probably bottom 5% of the accepted class (25th percentile is 2100). You have to be truly compelling in your high school academics and in a couple of things outside of school for them to want you, but they will super-score you, third attempt doesn’t hurt you more than already is the case.

@Bachanal: well that’s good. And I already started on other applications since my HS requires us to. ( I completed 2 more besides Columbia actually)

AP Scholar (lol)?, I am an athlete and did play in a soccer team…but it wasn’t the school soccer team…I told them such in the interview, but I don’t know how that’ll work, maybe I am related to King Tut (haha), I’m low income :/
