I guess I have missed some of the financial aid that I needed to do (first child to go to college). Certain colleges that I have applied to have contacted me to correct the missing information.

What I was wondering is, if those colleges that are asking me for my missing information, does that mean that I have gotten accepted? Why would a college bother to make every financial aid counselor work on applicant they were not going to accept?

No, it doesn’t mean anything. There is no way to know. Many colleges do prepare packages for everyone because admissions decisions are often made up until the last minute. You can imagine all you want, but do not make any decisions until you hear back from everyone.

My understanding is that financial aid departments do PRELIMINARY preparation for all applicants…but only do a final package for those accepted. So…if you have missing info, the finaid department IS going to flag that.

It depends upon the school and the situation even among schools. There are automatic flags for certain things that are missing, and schools do get ready for the big deluge. Fin Aid offices get hit hard to put together a lot packages in a very short time period between when they get the accept list and when it has to be mailed to the acceptees. A lot of work to do. But it’s also getting close to that time.
