Hi,
I am considering applying to Notre Dame. My only question is, does EVERYONE play sports? I am looking forward to being a fan, but I'm not athletic, and I'm not obsessed with sports at all. They're a very small part of my life. Is a huge percentage of the student body singularly obsessed with sports? Also, does a huge percentage participate in sports...I probably wouldn't, would I feel like a real outcast if I didn't?

Also, is there more drinking at ND than at other places?

Shellzie will be able to help you a bit more with this, but no, not everyone is a huge sports nut or plays sports, so don't worry. It still can be a lot of fun.

A good number of people drink here but you can get by without it easily if you wish and also there isn't nearly as much binge drinking here as other places IMO. I personally do not drink and have never had a problem

I would say more but I just got back from the MSU game and it is 5 in the morning. Night all!

Yeah, I was actually about to answer this question last night and then we started winning...lol. But definitely don't worry if you don't play sports. I am one of the most unathletic people out there and there are still plenty of activities for me to get involved in. I definitely don't feel like an outcast at all. Occasionally people will ask me if I want to go work out with them or something- but I think that's a good thing, because I most likely wouldn't otherwise, lol. Also, to be perfectly honest, I was not a big sports fan- not even football- before I came here. I went to one football game in high school, and I showed up late and left early. But coming here, the dynamic is so different and the excitement is contagious. Last night, after we won, I was cheering and running through Stonehenge with the best of them (which I still can't believe I did, lol). My high school friends are all laughing at me right now, because suddenly I am a football fan, so I wouldn't worry about it being difficult to get excited about sports here at ND. Also, there are so many other aspects of life at Notre Dame, sports is only part of it.

In response to your drinking question, it definitely depends on what schools you are comparing it to. Yes, people drink, but maybe not even as much as at some other schools, and the weekend activities do not solely revolve around alcohol, which is nice for people like me who don't like to go out and get drunk. When I visited Dartmouth, it seemed like the only thing to do was go to the frats and get wasted. There are a lot of people who drink here too, but, at least last night, it was in celebration rather than the "lets just go get ourselves as drunk as possible" attitude that seems to be present at some other schools. As I mentioned, I don't drink (at least not in excess) and I haven't felt any pressure to while I've been here.

Thank you so much for your responses...I'm still on the fence about ND but I have to say that you guys have given me a slightly more positive feeling on it. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out!!

teary eyed shellzie, reading about your 'celebration' after the game last night!!!
And, to think you were so close to chosing that "other" school!!

Sounds like you have become a very HAPPY DOMER :)

LOL,LOL you running around Stonehedge--what a vision!

OMG!!!!!!! I take back everything I said earlier. That was AMAZING!!!! I don't think I have ever before seen anything quite as crazy as campus after that game. I LOVE Notre Dame!

Lol, what can I say? I was excited... I would have never expected to find myself running through Stonehenge, but I had so much fun last night! I still kind of wonder what things would be like if I had chosen another school, I am very happy that I chose ND.

So, Sep092- I would definitely recommend Notre Dame and I wouldn't let concerns about the athletics and/or drinking dissuade you. ND football is really fun (even for someone who never cared about sports at all and is still a little shaky on the specifics). And, as I proved last night, it is possible to do some slightly crazy, really fun things here without touching a drop of alcohol. :)

certain intramural sports are big, like guys football and girls football. i know that guys play in full pads in the stadium for the final. not too sure about the girls. but guys football is taken seriously. there are plenty of other intramural sports, pretty much any sport you can think of. im not too involved in them but i know plenty of guys who are.

Since we are ranked #1 (at least last I checked) for Intramurals I think that you will like what they have to offer. There are a ton of options! Also, girls don't play tackle, but it still is intense!

Yeah, I can vouch for the intensity of girls football. A ton of the girls in my dorm play on our dorm team and they are pretty competitive. The girls also get to play in the stadium for the final.

Talk about girls football getting intense,,, At a recent powder-puff football game one girl broke both of her legs when one of the girls threw her down..........

Not sure...6 by 6 is bad enough for me because I only have 5 people to cover for my lack of abilities...God help me in 2x2. I will bump it for others though, since I just don't know
