Does Financial Aid cease senior year?

Bizarre, yet needed question: does the College stop need-based financial aid as the student approaches his/ her final year? I never heard of such a thing, but I reviewed the financial aid section of UChicago's website, and it states:

"If you are entering as a first-year, your eligibility for assistance from the College is limited to your first 12 academic quarters of enrollment. However, you may be eligible to receive federal assistance for as many as 18 quarters."

Or do summer quarters, in which no courses are taken, not considered part of the 12?

Excuse me ignorance-- I just worry with such a hefty price-tag that Chicago holds.

Not to fret. It means 12 quarters. There are 3 quarters per academic year. 3 times 4 = 12. Simple math. You will be covered for 4 full years. Hope that helps.
