It worked this way for our older son, who is at a different university. He is in Spain for a semester on a program approved by his university, and we pay the same as if he were having a regular semester at school, including housing. Does anyone know if it also works this way at Oberlin?

According to the Oberlin Study Abroad website ([Office of Study Away](Study Away (redirecting) | Oberlin College and Conservatory)), Oberlin financial aid transfers only to GLCA Recognized and Oberlin Affiliated programs. They charge you a fee for study abroad, but say on there that the costs of most programs are lower than the cost of Oberlin.
