I want to apply to UCLA...i will have finished all the pre-reqs for my major except one by fall (the time i apply). I will definitely finish it by spring...will this put me at a disadvantage?

I've heard that its better to have all the pre-reqs finished by the time you apply, but i've also heard that it doesn't matter, so long as you complete it before you transfer. Which one is right?

Also, keep in mind my major is HIGHLY competitive (communications)

i think it's better to have it finished by the time you apply, but it doesn't matter as long as you finish it before you transfer. It just seems to make more sense that if UCLA can see what grade you received in a pre-req before they make their decisions, they will prefer the person who has a grade to show for rather than someone who is taking that in the spring. That's my opinion.

Lets just put it this way, it differs with schools. UCI is leaning towards accepting me as I was told in an email, but Cal Poly rejected me because I missed one major pre-req. UCLA will allow one or two missing at most.

spkrjff25, was that one missing pre-req something you were going to finish the semester before you transfer, or was it a pre-req you would not be able to complete by the time you transfer?

It won't work against you but of course the applicants who have completed the pre-reqs AND have the same GPA as you will look more favorable in the eyes of the admissions officers. However, you are not the only one who will not have completed all the prereqs by the end of Fall. If you still think this might hurt you, make sure you spend time and effort into your personal statements.
