My friend is thinking of switching his math 1b class to p/np and retaking it over summer because he messed up his first exam badly?

If he gets a NP will it affect ANY part of his med school admissions whatsoever.

My friend is thinking of switching his math 1b class to p/np and retaking it over summer because he messed up his first exam badly?

If he gets a NP will it affect ANY part of his med school admissions whatsoever.

It will be treated as a F for the purposes of the med school admissions GPA. If he passes, most med schools don’t want P/NP for required classes, but a pass means you cant retake for credit at Cal.

To my understanding, if he passes, I believe it’ll get treated as a C-.

@inconnu: are you sure? are you only talking about pre-reqs, or just any course you take P/NP in general?

In general you should not take a class P/NP if it is required or if it has something to do with you intended focus. For example if you wish to study gene sequencing, you shouldn’t take that math or algorithms class P/NP even though it may be in a different college. For an unrelated class, P/NP is ok.

So I don’t know if I’m fully understanding but,

IF he takes Math 1b for P/NP and gets a P or NP
BUT THEN takes Math 16b over summer and gets an A, will they count the A or the NP or would they do some sort of average?

zorro, so you are in the position of getting a NP?

If you pass Math 1B, you cannot take 16B, they block credit.

If you get an NP, they treat it like the D/F it actually is.
If you get a P, they don’t care. The idea that they count it as a C- is extreme and rare.

Just in case you are wondering…

If you take the class P/NP, and ended up PASSING, then decide to retake it, you will not receive any credit the second time you are taking the class either. Let’s say next semester you retake 1B and get a A++++, it doesn’t get factored into your GPA; you will not receive credit, but the A++++ does stay on the transcript.

Yeah my friend went to a consular and a career center adviser and here’s the info he got:

If he gets a P in 1b, and then takes 16b, he will NOT get units for the class but the GRADE will show up on the transcript.

—> this means for example if he gets an A in 16b over the summer, it wont factor in his UC gpa, and he wont get UC units, but he will be able to write on his med school app that he took 16b and got an A in it, where the med school would then calculate there own GPA.

If he gets a NP. D, or F and then takes 16b, he WILL get units and 16b will factor in his UC GPA.

—> With the NP, depending on some med schools, it will count as a 0, but since grades are self reported, and if the class you report for your second year of calc is 16b, most likely most med schools will just look at that (again depending on the med school) .

but anyway in this case, the guy says he can probably get a C, but he really feels like the grade isnt an accurate reflection of his math ability, mostly because he just messed up an exam he feels he could have gotten an A on. So, he’s most likely just gonna get a P then take 16b over summer and get an A. He won’t get units, his gpa wont be affected by either 1b or 16b, but his good 16b grade will still show up assuming he does well.
