Does half black count as a URM?

If a student is half African American, half white, are they considered a URM? Does this count as black in the eyes of admissions officers?

The question you should be asking is Are you black in your own eyes?

Yes but that wasn’t the question

I believe that it would be considered URM, yes.

You’re still a URM yeah

Yes. I’m 1/8th Native American and that counts.

@ikooldiscovery Out of pure curiosity, are you registered with a federally recognized tribe?

@padr3r, you may check Afr Amer if you wish or you may check mixed race if you wish. It certainly makes things simple if you are looking for a URM edge, and it would be considered accurate by any measure. I’m sorry I can’t tell you for sure if it is considered URM everywhere or not, I haven’t explored enough. It appears likely at colleges that practice affirmative action. I think your race is part of the context of your application.

Yes, you will very likely be considered URM.

Yup. I would consider yourself multiracial which is something many colleges accept as URM.

Great News-You are Black. Not so great news- At the top schools being a Black URM is a thing of the past. Don’t blame me , blame the thousands and thousands of great Black students with high GPA’s, Boards, and EC’s.

@padr3r Yes and I hope to god you use it. CC’s obsession with perceived URM admissions advantage miss where the real advantages are bestowed. At my kid’s elite prep school the URMs were deferred from the ivies ED and the rich and connected got in. Generational legacy and wealth still gild the path to the elite colleges and the rest of us have to use whatever advantage we have, whether that’s URM status, high test scores or GPAs, impressive ECs, athletic prowess or other unique talent, compelling personal stories or a combination of these.

@HeyItsNick‌ nope, I called admissions for one college and they said its fine because I can prove it with a blood test (which is very unnecessary, I don’t need to register to be black)

Yes whomever said black students are not as sought after because of improved stats. It has been quite a switch for traditionally well prepared black students as QB and other students are filling the spaces before they are even seen.

Most of the colleges apps we’ve seen have blocks where you can check multiple. I’d recommend that.
