Does having an F in a non related major course affect my chance of getting accepted?

I have a 3.33 GPA currently, and I’m trying to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona from San Antonio community college. I recently changed my major from computer engineering to Computer Information System. I currently have one F in a physics class but apparently this class isn’t required for the Computer Information system major. I was wondering if the F would affect my chances of getting accepted? Does Cal Poly Pomona care more for GPA or the letter grade. To be honest, I don’t want to retake the physics again because I know I’ll fail it again. I was wondering if I’m able to ignore this F and just try to focus on improving my GPA. Will Cal Poly instantly deny me because of one F? Or do they care more about GPA and college credits. I current have 47/60 transferable credits. Do I have a chance of being accepted? Thank you.

Since the Physics course is CSU transferable, it will affect your chances in terms of lowering your GPA. Even though the class is not needed for your major, you should try to retake which will help your cumulative CSU Transfer GPA.

You should contact CPP admissions and ask them if you should retake. Due to the competitiveness of CPP in general, I would want to submit the best application possible which means a solid GPA. No, you will not be rejected automatically.

Will you have the minimum 60 semester units with all required prep courses and GE’s completed by Spring 2019? If so, then you have a chance but the F will stand out.

Thank you for the reply. I just finished seeing a counselor today, and he told me that I have a chance for fall 2019 if I have the remaining 13 credits finished by spring of 2019. Since Computer Information system is not an impacted major at the school, my counselor told me that the average GPA is 2.5-3 and I have a chance. He also mentioned to me that they look more into the GPA than the grade. In addition, I do have all my GE’s completed.

Thank you for the update and best of luck. You will never know unless you apply.
