Does having formal email address really matter?

Let's just say my name is John Smith.

Would it affect me that my email is

smith412@gmail (if 4/12 is my birthday)

rather than

johnsmith@gmail ?

People are emphasizing the need for formal emails, but I've already joined college mailing lists/put down the informal address on PSAT/college board account with the informal email so I'm wondering what I should do. Thanks!

I don’t think it would matter too much, as long as it’s appropriate.

People say you need to have a formal email address so that people don’t try to use “hotttttie_xoxo”. I can’t imagine yours would ever be a problem.

hotsurferchick123@asdf.com would show immaturity. Your email address should be related to your name.

If you have a very common name along the line of John Smith, you may well need to include something logical, and appropriately formal, in order to create a unique email address. Using part of your birth date makes sense.

Then again if you have an uncommon name, working through various combinations (john.smith, johnsmith, smith.john, etc.) probably will mean that you don’t need any numbers.
