Does it hurt to take a subject test without prep first time?

So I’m studying for the SAT chemistry subject test right now and I plan to take in it June.
I plan to study over summer for the SAT math 1 test to take it in august or September
Should I take the math 1 test in June without much prep just for practice?
I got a 770 on my SAT math for reference.
I don’t expect to do above a 700 on the math 1 subject test right now, and will probably will do very poorly. Will a poor subject test the first time hurt me?

If you’ve taken honors chemistry and done well you should do fine on the chemistry subject test. If you’ve taken AP, little to no studying is necessary (it was a breeze lol)
770 on the SAT really isn’t bad, I would have higher expectations than a 700 on the math 1 subject test. I would still study if you are uneasy.
That being said, you don’t have to report your SAT subject tests if you don’t want to; getting a 200 on one will not prevent you from getting into Harvard, as long as you don’t send your score to them.

Good luck!

Multiple goes at SAT subject tests is not the same as a couple of goes at the SAT. If you are aiming for top schools, you should only take a subject test once. And if you have the grades for a top school, getting a 200 on the Subject Test will raise questions.

Best time to take a subject test is at the end of the school year when you are completing the associated course. Then your studying for the course applies to the subject test, and the material will still be fresh in your mind.

So if you are completing algebra 2 or integrated math 3 (i.e. first three years of high school math including two years of algebra and a year of geometry), then taking math level 1 at the end of this school year makes sense. If you are completing precalculus, math level 2 is a more appropriate subject test.
