Does it hurt your chances to top school if you dont take the SAT 2 subject tests?

A lot of schools dont require the subject tests if you take the ACT but i was wondering if it looks bad and is a major detriment to the application

If you are submitting your ACT score and they take it as a replacement of your SAT and SAT II, then you don’t need to take any subject tests and it won’t hurt your application.

It doesn’t look bad, since the college specifically says that the ACT score replaces the SAT II scores. It definitely won’t hurt your application. However, if you’re applying to a top college, there will be tons of other applicants- and a lot of them WILL have SAT II scores regardless of having an ACT score. If you want to be really competitive and increase your chances among the applicant pool, then take the SAT II’s (after studying, of course).

If you took the ACT with writing, you are fine.

ACT doesn’t replace SAT II’s at all schools, does it?

You are correct.

if any of your schools require SAT IIs then you’ll have to take them, and if you do really well (750+ or so) then you might as well send them to all of your schools, even if they’re not required. If all of your schools accept ACT instead of SAT + SAT II, then I wouldn’t bother spending the money.

My S got a 35 on the ACT when he took it the first time Dec of junior year. In June, he took SAT 2 in Physics & Math II and got 740 on both. Do you think it’s worthwhile for a retake? Is his SAT 2 scores good enough to send to schools that don’t require them?

Schools that require at least two Subject tests even if the ACT is submitted (some of these may make exceptions for certain kinds of applicants).

CalTech
Carnegie Mellon
Columbia
Cornell
Dartmouth
Franklin Olin
Harvard
Harvey Mudd
MIT
Princeton
Rice
UC’s (all)
Washington & Lee
Williams

Two schools recommend (or strongly recommend), but do not require, at least three Subject tests in addition to requiring the SAT or ACT.

Johns Hopkins
Georgetown

Many other schools recommend at least one or two Subject tests as well as requiring the SAT or ACT.

One school, the Webb Institute, requires at least two Subject tests and does not accept the ACT.

SAT and two Subject Tests, or ACT with the writing test. All examination scores must be sent directly to Rice from the testing agency. If you choose to take two SAT subject tests, we recommend choosing subjects related to your proposed area of study.

I copied from Rice Admission page.

Thank you. You are correct.

Typically a trustworthy link, but they appear to have gotten Rice wrong. Which goes to show that the ultimate authority on requirements is always a college’s admissions office. Always check there first before applying.
