Does it matter which subject tests you take?

Or is it just a matter of preference?

I want to major in computer Science, is it okay if I take Lit & US History subject tests just to fulfill certain college's subject test requirements?

In some universities like Cornell, if you apply to major in CS in the Arts & Sci college, you can take ANY subject test. But if you major CS in the college of Engineering then you need to take a Phy & maths sub tests.

But the question is, will taking sub tests like US History pull down the value of my application? (Even though I apply in Arts & Sci college which DOESN'T require maths/sci sub test)

Will it make me look bad on the application? Like I'm trying to take the easy way out?

I don’t think it would pull you down, but it won’t pull you up

^ that’s not necessarily true. Getting a good score on anything is always a benefit, even if it’s in an unrelated field.

We are in a similar situation - not certain yet, but our daughter is thinking about CS major and just had the US History and Literature tests. I thought it’s an odd man out thing but maybe not so much.

Thanks for your responses. I think if it doesn’t pull down the value of the application and doesn’t make the student seem like a slacker, it is better to give the test in which s/he is confident that s/he will get a good score.

Isn’t 780 in US History better than 600 in Physics?
