Does IU have substance free housing for freshman?

I will be a Freshman at IU next year. I drank a lot in the first half of high school and lived in a family that abused it very much. I know what it does and I am SO over it. I don't want to live near it and I don't want to be living on a floor with drunk people.

I can't seem to find anything about a substance-free floor though! I was told if I pick the Southeast dorms I will probably not see much alcohol but I really don't want to take the chance. I want to live with young people my age who are non-drinkers.

This probably sounds obscure but I have been through way too much. You can read my previous posts to find out what I mean. But I REALLY want to find a substance free area.

Does anyone know?

Thanks so much, so appreciated!

Call RPS (you can find it on the IUB web site) and ask. Hopefully they do but I don’t recall seeing that when my daughter was choosing.
But I also recommend SE dorms. D hasn’t seen any in-dorm partying there. Not to say it doesn’t ever happen, but certainly not rampant. And I’m sure some kids go out to party, but she’s never seen people throwing up in the bathroom all night or any of that.

If you are invited to Honors, go for Honors housing. Or choose an Academic community.

She’s found SE to be fun but not drunken-party oriented at all.

Good luck to you!

There’s no designated substance free dorm, but my S also lives in SE in Read where a lot of the music students live, and has seen no in-dorm partying. Certainly it’s there, and he says that people who want to find it can, but his sense is that it’s generally off campus. He went to IU with the goal of not drinking, which I thought was going to put him in a difficult situation socially, but he’s been very happy that it has not been an issue at all.

Your best bet is to live in either Forest or Read. I was an RA at Forest for a year and can easily say the drinking scene there is very low key. No matter where you go though, there will be drinking, but don’t let that discourage you. Picking an Honors Floor or Academic Floor will reduce the chances of it being accepted. I lived on an honors floor my freshman year and, as a floor, we decided NOT to put up with anyone drinking one the floor. You can very easily do the same if you talk with your floor mates and RA. Don’t let it get to you, no matter what your floor is like you will always find floor mates that will not drink and still be very social and very fun.

I say choose Read or Forest, and get an Academic floor. I’m on an Academic floor in Forest and not only is it nice, there is absolute no instances where someone has been drunk or drinking on this floor. If you aren’t a music major, you’ll most likely be placed in Forest when you choose the Southwest dorms when you apply for housing. Don’t listen to the people that say “Southwest is anti-social!!!”. What they really mean is “Southwest isn’t full of parties!!!”. If you are serious about school, this is the place to be. Forest is extremely diverse in my opinion and you’ll find friends of every type.

However, be warned that there is still substance abuse here. I get on the elevators sometimes and smell what I believe is marijuana on some people, but they usually live on the regular floors and are almost always male. There have been a few instances of alcohol poisoning, but you’re going to get that anywhere.
