Does JHU give lots of aid?

does JHU give full financial aid to those in low income brackets (like the ivys do)?

iv been wondering the same thing, and apparently they are not. from ym research i have seen that the EFC they apply is not close to the actual one… look at this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/johns-hopkins-university/679813-join-club-accepted-into-jhu-without-f-afford.html?highlight=financial</a> im disappointed i really liked this school. im deabting whether to apply or not, i mean what the point if im not going to be able to afford it right?

JHU gives some of the best financial aid around. Forbes rated Hopkins as one of the most affordable colleges in the USA.

It’s hard to know how much you are going to get unless you apply to these places that look expensive.

GL

i think with the recession its getting harder for colleges to give huge amounts

If you’re unsatisfied with the aid you get, you can always appeal—that’s what my parents decided to do. Also, start thinking about outside scholarships. Some are need-based so if they see that your college has left you a big gap, they’ll take that into consideration.

Read this thread, a lot of people gave information on JHU

Here’s the deal: most of the kids who go to JH are pretty affluent. So, most kids with need have very little. If your need (COA-EFC) is like 1000 or 2000, JH will gladly work out a loan or something so your need is 100% covered by FA. The great number of these cases works into the statistics of JH’s 95-98% average percent of need met.

My federally formulated need is a lot more, but JH expects me to pay almost twice (out of pocket) my need. Whatever, it’s still a decent grant I’m getting.

I can speak from personal experience. My family needed a lot…ALOT of FA for me to be able to attend JHU as I am nowhere near affluent and when I got the acceptance and financial aid package, the amount that remained for us to pay was exactly what my family stated we could afford and would be willing to pay. No loans were involved.

I have an EFC that does NOT reflect what my family is able to pay—however, we appealed for aid and Hopkins was very accommodating (and increased my GRANT not my loan.) I’m extremely thankful for how understanding they were.

Right now, I’m paying just a little above what I would’ve payed as an in-stater at an NY state school (as far as Binghamton and Geneseo were offering me anyway.)

To my understanding JHU is not entirely need blind…I have heard that JHU has a set budget of financial aid for their incoming domestic students, and if they run out of aid, they start rejecting kids who require massive FA…

Really? I thought I read somewhere that they switched to full need-blind in 2006? (I could be lying—my memory is failing me.) And I also remember AdmissionsDaniel always upholding that the financial and application review are separate.

On a semi-related note, waitlist is not need-blind.

"JHU is not entirely need blind…I have heard that JHU has a set budget of financial aid for their incoming domestic students, and if they run out of aid, they start rejecting kids who require massive FA… "

ughh im thinking of not applying here, im problaly not going t be able to afford it anyway!!

“Johns Hopkins admits all students on the basis of their academic preparation, personal strengths, and accomplishments without regard to their ability to meet the cost of a Johns Hopkins education.”

That is a quotation from the admissions/financial aid website. It is probably more accurate than someone’s opinion or recollection.

Hopkins is needs blind, but not “100% needs blind” because it is “needs aware” with respect to international applicants, transfer students and students admitted from the waitlist. Otherwise, it is needs blind.
