Hi! I've been encountering a lot of people who are going to go to McGill. I've always heard McGill had very high standards it can even be compared to Harvard and the other leading universities in the world. But it seems to me that almost anyone can easily be accepted and admitted! Anyone would comment on that? I'd very much like to be proved wrong.

Well, in Canada schools have almost zero admission standards. To get into McGill from Quebec you just need to pass through CEGEP.

I’m going to have to disagree. Just passing through CEGEP does NOT automatically guarantee admission to McGill. I know plenty of people who graduated from CEGEP - and didn’t do too badly (70-75% average) - but did not get accepted.

While it’s not automatic, admission for Quebec students is substantially easier than it is for out-of-province and international students, and this tends to skew the admit rate upwards. The admit rate for non-Quebec students is probably considerably less than 46%.
That being said, admission to McGill even for out-of-province students is easier than to an American university of similar standing.

I agree, McGill admission is easier for everyone regardless of their origins than most American schools.
Just a side note: CEGEP is not like high school! The difficulty level is much higher (it is post-secondary education, after all) and McGill obviously knows this and takes it into account in their admissions decisions. So yes, they are easier on Quebec students. Of course, they also probably have a certain quota to fill and may take in more ‘lesser qualified’ Quebec students to fill that quota…

So McGill is easier to get into than U of T? If so, does that mean that U of T is better??

the school’s acceptance rate does not necessarily make the school better…
i know in the U.S., at least on the east coast (where i live), mcgill is very well recognized… much better than U of T

The example that they always use on the Cornell University thread is that if acceptance rates make a better school, than College of the Ozarks is better than UChicago.

Because McGill’s average entering grades are higher and undergraduate body is smaller, I think that U of T is probably easier to get into, not harder.

As an international I can vouch that UofT is much easier to get into than McGill. Btw, Im talking about the main downtown campus.
The other two are even easier.

ps-Sarah?:P

Getting into McGill much easier than doing well there. It’s a public university and cannot be as selective as the other schools that it rubs shoulders with.

In contrast with US schools, it’s “easier to get in, harder to stay.” You’ll have to work to be here.
