I put IR on my application, but I might want to switch to Anthropology. Should I go to the trouble of calling NYU and telling them or will it not matter for admissions anyway?

If it’s in a different school, it does matter.

what?

10char

^different department/school, like School of Sciences, School of International Relation, School of Social Sciences, etc… So probably, yes.

To respond to the other posters, no worries, IR and Anthropology are both majors under CAS :]
But if you definitely know for sure that you want to switch, you should call them now for two reasons: just in case it DOES matter what major to apply under, and second, so if you do get in and attend NYU, you don’t have to go through the hassle of waiting a whole semester or two before you can change your major

wait, at college, how does having a declared major during freshmen year make life any different than being undecided?

^ i would think that being undecided, you can only take introductory classes to any major you are considering. being declared you can take something a little deeper.

though, i thought it was an across the board rule that all official major declarations happen in soph year?

People really shouldn’t answer questions when they don’t know the answer…

Anyway,
For CAS, the major you apply for doesn’t matter because a lot of people change their majors, so being undecided and having a declared major doesn’t change anything. CAS majors tend to be around 10 classes, so it’s very possible to finish major requirements in 2 years. Students in CAS have to declare a major by the end of sophomore year, but they can always declare it earlier and they can always change it.
