I know they aren’t required but are they considered? It’s not clear on their website. Thank you!
I believe starting recently they explicitly do not look at them. If someone could confirm this it would be great though.
@teabiscuit @PengsPhils My S sent 3 subject tests: Math L2 800, Physics 790, and Bio E 730. I don’t think the subject test hurt his application at all. He was admitted to the Engineering School as University Scholar.
If you have good subject test, I would recommend you to send them
@kittymom1102 I also sent in my SAT2’s when I applied, but I remember seeing somewhere that they officially do not look at them at all starting this year - so they would just go to the trash bin if you sent them. I can’t seem to find it now though which is why I’m hoping someone else can confirm.
If no one can confirm then yeah, send them if they’re good.
@PengsPhils I don’t see how good scores can hurt. It definitely did not hurt S’s application. He sent everything, everywhere …
@kittymom1102 agree- if they are good, then kids should send, but the question is do they even look at them, this year? Its a good question for kids that are very interested in NEU and have not taken them. If the school looks at them, but doesn’t require them, then its worth giving the subject tests a go, if not, then its a waste of time and money.
@kittymom1102 They can’t hurt but as @suzyQ7 said, it could be a waste of time/money to send or take them. I’m gonna try to look again to see if they have any notes on the consideration - the common data set for it is all blank though
@suzyQ7 To be honest, I don’t know what the admissions committee see or doesn’t see. I would suggest browsing through the Decisoins Thread and see if there some relation between SAT Subject tests and acceptance/merit aid.
I am sharing my S’s experience as an example of how things went for him with subject tests. Did his subject tests set him apart from the other applicants? Would his application have done as well as it did without the subject tests? I have no idea.
My humble advice is send everything. No one knows what happens behind close doors and how decisions are made. If I were an applicant, I would give it all
@PengsPhils If you don’t have subject tests at this point in the game, don’t even think about them. Your application won’t be incomplete. You’ll be fine
Schools generally have testing clearly defined… They super score or they don’t, they consider subject tests (but don’t require) or not. If they have a new policy of not looking at subject tests, the expectation is that they would be suppressed from the electronic files they use in the admissions process. It’s not like these scores are mailed in and printed into a manila folder anymore. Again, most schools are clear, one way or another. Not sure why NEU is being ambiguous in this case.
@suzyQ7 I’ve heard people complaining about similar issues with UC Berkeley and UCLA.
Fortunately, S didn’t have to bother with score policies anywhere. All his testing was on the first try. There was only one set of SAT scores, and the 3 subject test.
For what I’ve noticed, the score issue can get a bit messy, as different schools have different rules and not all the schools are as clear
@kittymom1102 I am actually a sophomore at NEU! I’m also a Husky Ambassador, one of the tour guides from the school and keep a close pulse on admissions: I’m noting all of this for future students, particularly any juniors who may find the thread.
Hm. Well I found a CC comment from 2011 saying they don’t even consider them but it doesn’t have a source.

@PengsPhils You’re closer to the source! Find out and share the info
I may just ask someone when I get back to school, this one is really unclear. Apparently there’s threads going all the way back to 2010 trying to determine if they consider them at all. For now, send em if you got em.
SAT II’s are required for home schooled applicants. No mention if they are even considered for others.
SAT subject test scores will not be added to your admissions file (according to the admissions director who replied to my email back in Nov):
“Thank you for your email! However, as we do not use the SAT subject tests in our evaluation, they will not be added to your file.”
I had asked if NEU had received my SAT subject test scores because they weren’t showing up on my application status page. Hope this helps!
P.S. I was admitted EA with merit. So happy!
@dreambig2018 thanks, this is very helpful info! And congrats on your admission! Address you planning on attending NEU?
@suzyQ7 NEU is one of my top choices and I hope it works out. I loved when I visited this summer. I need to wait, though, until the end of March to compare total final costs with other colleges where I may be accepted. I received the merit that is $10,000 starting in my sophomore year (so $30,000 total). It is a lot of money and I am very grateful but I need to wait to decide.
