I honestly didn't even realize interviewing for William and Mary was an option until recently. I wish I'd done more research earlier =/. As there are limited spots, I'd assume that the interview spots are all already filled. So I won't be able to interview. Will this hurt my chances of getting into the school?

Very few schools require interviews. I’ve not heard W&M as one of them. You should be fine

The admissions dean from W&M used to post on here, so maybe you could ask your question on the W&M page.

don’t worry - I didn’t interview and I got in! I think it’s something that can help you if you do it, but they aren’t going to penalize you for not doing it

I think you could potentially still get an interview if you wanted to. I didn’t interview and I got in. The interview is completely optional so it won’t hurt you to not do it.

If you feel like you would interview well, check and see if you can still interview. You may very well be able to do so this summer or fall of next year (depending on where you live and/or plans to be near campus). But if you don’t think you interview well, consider not doing so unless it is required. My D2 was not strong in interviews, and chose not to interview at any of the eight colleges she applied to. She got into all eight, including U of Chicago, Swarthmore, Harvey Mudd, and Carleton.

Interviewing at W&M is an optional component to our process. Given that we offer them only on-campus and at limited times of year we recognize that not all interested students will be able to participate. It’s designed as a way to enhance the personal side of your application. We absolutely still have appointments left this summer that you can register for online.

Thanks for all of the answers! I realize I’m responding to this late but, @W&M Admission, if you happen to read this again, would you recommend getting an interview? Would it improve my chances?

@kitkat, if you’re going to be on campus at a time we offer interviews and you’re comfortable talking about yourself one-on-one, with someone you’ve never met before, then yes. Interviewing is designed to amplify your application but we know that not all students thrive in that type of setting. That being said we certainly don’t think people need to fly cross-country simply to interview. We will note that summer appointments are going fast and there aren’t a ton left so schedule one ASAP if that’s your plan.

Also, if you live relatively nearby and/or are planning a visit in the fall, you can interview then – combine it with a visit, take the chance to sit in on a class or have lunch with a couple of students and make sure W&M really is a perfect fit for you and you for W&M. There are plenty of fall appointments.

@artemis95 is correct in that we do offer interviews in the fall but on a much more limited basis than we do during the summer. Sometimes there’s only 1-2 appointments per day so we do encourage a summer visit if possible because our schedule is much more flexible then. Fall interviews are available and registration goes live September 1 but appointments fill very quickly.

Thanks so much for the advice and information, W&M.
