Does not visiting a college considered a bad thing? Or okay?

Visiting a school can be beneficial because it gives an idea of what kind of school you would like to attend. But I wouldn't put a lot of emphasis on visiting every single school you wanna go to. That excerpt from wilkipedia about how if you don't show interest in an "elite" college then they will definitely not accept you is wrong. I didn't show any interest in one of the "elite" colleges I applied to, meaning I didn't visit it and stuff, and was still accepted.

Another thing is that when you are visiting colleges, it's okay to visit all of the schools that you are matched with. But take caution in visiting a reach school because that could cause heartache. I visited one of the reach schools I was applying to over the summer, and I loved it. I had invested so much time and effort into this school and became emotionally attached to it. That rejection is the one that caused the most heartache for me and I'm still a little bitter over it.

Visiting a college before you get accepted is definitely not as important as some people make it out to be. I think that once you get accepted to that college, then you definitely have to go visit it to get a feel for the school.

It depends on the school. At HYP and large state U's will it matter whether or not you visit? Nope. At a school like Columbia, they ask you straight up on the application what contact you have had with the school in terms of tours, visits, overnight, etc. Living in NYC and not visiting is almost the kiss of death.

Does it matter at smaller colleges, yes because they want to know that a school knows their school, and they keep track of the visits. I would suggest looking up the latest version of the common data set for the schools that you are interested in because demonstrated interest is now listed as a category along with a ranking from very important to not important.

What would you say about the UC schools? Do they care? They are large universities, so Im not sure if they even care.

I agree that it would matter very little if you visted the UC as a whole.

Hmm.. what about UCLA?
