Does Origami count as EC?

Hey guys, I have an obsession with Origami, I'm pretty good. Some people can make cranes, but I can make everything and anything on the spot. Just tell me and I can do it. Over the summer and part of my fall, I participated in the National Origami USA Tour. I had received a scholarship of 1000 dollars, so I got to go on the tour for free. I got to visit China, Japan, France, Holland, and Spain. While I was there, I got to take seminars and compete in competitions. I wasn't able to win antyhing, but I did get some honors. While I was there, I also taught origami to underprivileged kids.

Should I put this on my college app, or will colleges laugh?

It's an EC. I suggest you write an essay about it to legitimize it, just in case.

it's an unusual EC, so definitely put it in. as zogoto says, put it in an essay. seems like your passion, and the worst thing you can do in the admissions process is to leave out your passion.

I think that is so cool. Definitely a real neat essay topic. Do you also have a strong cultural interest in the Far East? How very interesting! Good luck!

that is an AWESOME ec :)

because my parents and friends think it'll look stupid if colleges think I fold paper for fun.

Yo wutup my negro! That is a great EC and you should use it. Sure there are Varsity athletes, math award geniuses, but if you can fold paper really good then thats amazing. Its like when people say that if you are the best at something then simply do it and you can make money out it.

Origami is not just folding paper for fun - there are some amazing things being done lately, many quite mathematical in their approach. Origami combines art and logic, bridges cultures, and is just fascinating. I think you have an impressive EC there!

That is one of the coolest ECs I've heard of and the fact that you took it to such a competitive level is very impressive. Unusual and intriguing hobbies will certainly get the attention of the exhausted adcoms trudging through piles and piles of more typical applications. I agree that you should write about it.

when you guys say write about it as an essay... do you mean as one of the short answer questions, or one the main common application essay??

Make it a long essay. I suggest you include a supplemental essay with all your applications, so you'll still have an essay for another one.

i sned a supplmenetal essay about my passions for schools that don't have that as their required long essay question.

hey how do u start to put up a new thread, meaning how do u start ur own, a new one instead of put posting quick replies.

look for the "new thread" button

where is the "new Thread" button located because i dont see it on my screen, is it like in the top left hand corner or something or do i have to go somwhere, open up something. This is really stupid that i cannot find it !!

around the top left

it's white

well thanks

When I first read the title of this thread I was thinking "oh my GOD you must be kidding me... why would people try to pass origami off as an EC?!?!"

But then I actually read your post. And not that my opinion matters, but I think it's really cool. I didn't even know that there were competitions like that. And to travel around to showcase your talent? That is an extremely unique EC... some might even call it a hook...

I think it counts as an ec.

Wow...I think that definitely counts...plus it's a pretty legitimate thing, seeing that you've been on a tour for it and everything! I would say to put it down as an EC.
