Does reapply for RD after ED rejection hurt chances during RD admissions?

I was denied from Carnegie Mellon for CIT ChemE early decision and chose to reapply for MCS Math for regular decision, does having applied and denied under ED hurt my chances for RD?

yes. your application wont be considered .

Being denied for ED will not allow you to be considered for RD for the same school year. It won’t hurt. You’re simply ineligible. Only one bite at the apple.

Well I know without a doubt I will be considered for RD. They specifically had a form to fill out titled “consideration for regular decision” for those denied under ED. I had to apply to another college, I chose the Mellon College of Science since I was rejected from the Carnegie Institute of Tehnology. I suppose my question is a bit specific; I didn’t realize CMU’s process of applying both ED and RD in the same cycle is not common.

That is the only school I have heard of that does that. Might be others, but it is uncommon.

well if that’s the case its a first.

are you sure you weren’t deferred?

Yes

It is a very unusual program so i don’t know what the impact of that first denial will be.

CMU allows this because CMU admits by schools/colleges - applications to different schools are considered by completely different committees and look for fairly different things. I think in this case your RD application would be considered separately from your ED application… did you have to write different essays for your RD MCS application?

@aznraffe I had to write a short essay explaining my College and Program choice for my regular decision consideration.

@Kylemcgrogan Yeah, then those are the essays that MCS will use when evaluating your RD application. I’m not 100% certain, but I think your rejection for ED CIT won’t affect your RD MCS application - if you look at past years’ CMU results threads, there are a fair number of people who got rejected to their first choice school (CIT or SCS) but accepted to MCS (second choice school)

Thanks @aznraffe I was really hoping that is the case. My test scores both Sat and Sat 2 for math have been outstanding as well as my grades. My calc teacher wrote in my LOR that I was his best student of his 27 year career. I’m really hoping I could get in for a math major, i feel like I have a fair chance.
