Does the roommate essay have to be about an "experience"?

I know the roommate essay says to write about a "personal experience that reveals something about you," but what if I want to write something that would actually be relevant to my roommate, such as some habit of mine? Would that fail to answer the prompt?

sure u could write about a habit... just modify an experience so it kind of exemplifies that habit

I agree with Salik. Don't just write about a habit... it will not answer the question, but if you show how the habit affected a certain experience it would work.

I'd stick with an experience that shows that habit of yours (if you plan to share that with your roommate). Stick with the question and somehow revolve your essay around a specific experience.

If it's not too personal, what is the habit?
(you definitely don't have to respond)

I have a habit on randomly exploring things on a whim. Sometimes, for example, I might stop and look at something (like a bird) for a really long time, or, when I was much younger, I once stayed up the whole night just to see the sun rise (now I can no longer afford such a loss of sleep!). But basically, I would want my future roommates to not be alarmed or think I'm having some type of problem when that whim seizes me.

That I have to write about an experience, rather than many, makes this habit difficult to exemplify. I don't think I could write that much about looking at an ant hill for half an hour.

I don't think they'd mind if you kind of stretched the prompt. The main thing is that it says something about you.

Actually, you sound like a pretty cool, interesting potential roommate. And these definitely are experiences to share in your essay.

It sounds like you enjoy observing nature, the world around you, etc. for extended periods of time and some examples include ...

Try writing your essay that way. Good luck!

hahahaha! Asquith, would it freak you out if I do that, too?

"when I was much younger, I once stayed up the whole night just to see the sun rise (now I can no longer afford such a loss of sleep!)."

That's the experience you should write about then (revealing your habit)

Not at all, and I would love to meet you! We could exchange random observations about the world. :D

Thanks for everyone's input! This could be a fun essay question after all!

"I don't think I could write that much about looking at an ant hill for half an hour."

I love this. You can write a great short essay!

hehe i also have the habit of randomly picking things up and examining them... even dead birds ... gross i kno... one time i was waiting for a swim meet saw a dead bird and started moving it with a stick, and this girl was like ewwwwww....

and i was like... i just wanted to see the wings understructure...
oh yeah and i draw birds alot too...

Well, what you could always do is start with a specific story, like the one of you staying up all night, then use that to talk about your general habit. Adding a little bit of narrative will make your essay richer, anyway.
