I recently got accepted into KU and I hope to become the first doctor in the family and I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on KU’s pre-med program.
We’re you admitted to the honors college?
There’s no such thing as a ‘premed program.’ You’ll take the same 5 chemistry classes as chemistry majors and will have to rank in the top 10-20%. You’ll take the same 2 biology classes as biology majors and will have to take in the top 10-20%. Etc.
There’ll be heavy weeding and you’ll have to hit the ground running - fellow freshmen will be partying till all hours during your first few weeks and out won’t be able to join (I recommend asking for a substance free dorms or a health- related LLC.)
What makes a program good for premeds is how much support you can have: free tutors, a tutoring center where you don’t have to book a slot a week or days ahead of time but can just go whenever, study groups and ease of forming them + reserving a special room in the library, review session…
Have you received your financial aid package yet? Where else are you applying?
I was not admitted into their honors college, I have not received that yet and I am also applying to IUPUI, IU, IIT, Purdue, and U of Arkansas.
What’s instate for you, your efc and budget, and stats?
The U of Arkansas and my gpa is 2.77-2.8 and my ACT score is 24.
There is a high degree of correlation between ACT and MCAT scores. You will have to perform significantly better on the MCAT than you did on the ACT in order to get into med school. The following sites analytically analyze the relationship.
Ok, then you shouldn’t choose KU over Arkansas. You’re not likely to get ANY financial aid from KU.
It’ll be hard for you to stand out as a premed at UArk, but financially it should work and there are plenty of majors for you - especially if you’re not firm on premed, UArk would be a fine choice.
If you’re serious about being premed, you can apply to any of those: Hendrix (reach), University of Montevallo, Lyon, UTampa, Eckerd, Flagler, Lynn, Centenary LA, U New Orleans, U Southern Mississippi, Guilford, Lincoln Memorial, St Edwards, Austin College, Lycoming, Lebanon Valley, Goucher (reach), Randolph, Roanoke.
Apply to a few, compare net costs to UArk, and attend the best fit for the bes value.
Keep in mind that almost all freshmen who come in as premeds change their minds. Try to think about subjects you’re good at and subjects you’re curious about. Remember you can major in anything and find a good job, as long as you develop internship and applied skills that relate to that major.
