Does this kid stand a chance?

I myself know nothing about Rice (sorry but my loyalty is to the Umich thread:)) BUT one of my good friends is applying...does he have a chance?

Caucasian male
Out of state
Private school
unweighted gpa: 3.83
best score sat1: 1300
sat2: 570, 640, 600

He is applying straight into the school of architecture
No previous architecture experience whatsoever, but since october, has convinced himself he WILL be an architect... he's TRYING to put together some sort of portfolio with random pictures he took from photography class (and he's not good at photography).

ECs: swim team, freshman class president, executive team for our of our school retreats

good recs, but dont count on a good essay (not the best writer)

thats it. is that enough, esp for the school of architecture?

I'm applying to the School of Architecture at Rice and those scores are around mine, too. However, my portfolio's pretty good and so are my essays. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging or anything because trust me, my SAT scores (1300, 630, 600, 600) are a tad bit below average. But, like I said I do have some redeeming qualities: my strong portfolio, essays, and recs, and Houston-resident status. I'm also top 5% at a well-known private school in Houston. However, I think the main thing that the arch school is looking for is the creativity--in other words, a STRONG portfolio. Like hypothetically speaking, if someone had a 1600, but coudln't draw, I don't think he would be admitted, you know? So really, there is no set standard. Test scores and class rank CAN deviate from the standard. Rice looks at students wholistically. Hopefully your friend is outstanding in one particular area?

To give you the stats, the arch school only lets in about 35 students out of 200-250 applicants. Let your friend know that it's also a SIX year program. So I would just tell your friend to do his best and then hope and pray for an acceptance letter. Tell him I said good luck!

** To note, the acceptance percentages are: 28% ED, 28% ID, and 17% RD. I applied ID.

Oh yes, I also have lots of extracurriculars.

what is ID?...and my friend doesnt know anything about art...he is in basic art class with me, we cut pictures out of magazines and make collages lol

ID= interim decision
apply by dec. 1, got decision by feb
