Applying ID

also alying to cornell, umich, wustl and syracuse

i'm from houston, and i know that as an outside texas candidate, your chances at rice will be lower. but, you seem very qualified. maybe i'll be seeing you there? i just got accepted to the shephard school of music at rice.

have you considered columbia, brown and princeton which have good architecture schools as well?

what sort of sat scores etc did you get thatindiandude?

see, i'm still applying to other schools. i'm actually going to be a 3 year high school graduate. ok, but for my sat I i earned a 1520 and my sat II avg for math II, writing and ushist was 710. i was top 7% of my class.

the grades and all are good, and i go to a feeder school in the area. but that's not why i gained admission. see, i've given multiple concerts at the school's hall and i've won competitions at the national level-those are probably why they're letting me in, because i'm in without even applying. they're just recruiting me like that.

i'll just post my stuf:

Any advice is very helpful, unless, of course, it's unrelenting destructive. Haha, so please keep it calm and constructive =) Thanks.

WOW! Im never going to get in.

Clear lake high school?

whats clear lake?

Not Clear Lake High School, but the University of Houston-Clear Lake Campus.

But look, you're extremely qualified in your field. Architecture? I think you have a great shot, and it's obvious that you know what you're doing.

I just got in because of music. They didn't see my other stuff, so my admission to their school of music only means that I can play at Rice, nothing else. Don't worry, it'll be ok. Rice doesn't really care much about legacy, but what does your dad do now, and where does he live?

thatindiandude: You have amazing talent in music (and for an Indian). Your parents must not be a stero-typical Indian parents.

To OP: Architect and Shepherd school of music are the hardest school to get in.

he is an architect im not doing it to follow in his footsteps or anything and neither did he push me into it (actually, he seriously asked me to reconsider when i told him i wanted to to architecture). anyway, why am i getting defensive.
he(along with me) lives in new delhi and has a 40 person practice which he owns.

thatindiandude, that's so cool! my friend who's a sophomore is in Rice's shephard school of music right now! congrats!

thatindiandude, what chopin do you play?

I've played all his etudes, nocturnes, mazurkas and polonaisses. However, I just recently learned Fantasie Impromptu. I'm not really big on Chopin-what I mean, is that he's one of my less revered composers because I feel his work is just too...odd. But, don't listen to the rumors: Fantasie Impromptu is not one of the MOST DIFFICULT pieces in the world. My suggestion would be: if you are interested in Chopin, take a look at Revel before you start that Chopin piece, because you just might like his impressionist works more than Mr.Fredric's. If you have any more questions bout music, don't hesitate to just IM me at nomoreflab or email me at vidhariharan@yahoo.com.

Ever try Liszt? I'm playing Gershwin right now... Rhapsody in Blue. I'm not hardcore like you though, I just play for fun.

thatindiandude, that's really cool. I like Chopin, but what I've played is pretty basic compared to what you've played. I've only tried the Revolutionary etude, but pretty much gave up. after three weeks (Left hand really didn't seem all that hard after repition though). I've played a good amount of his nocturnes and waltzes. No mazurkas. I've played the "classic" military polonaisse and am working on the Ab one now. About Revel, I played Debussy instead of Revel- my teacher already gave me that idea:) Same here, I play most for fun.

several more questions for thatindiandude: When did you start playing etudes and how in the world do you find time to work on all those pieces? (and finish them!) and, Did you decide not to apply to Harvard ED?
