Does this make sense? DOES anyone else have this problem?!!

Hi I'm a going to be a senior for the class of 2010 and I just took the SATS in june. I am going crazy and killing myself over the SATS. Before the test I prepared efficiently by taking many practice exams. I'm not that great at math so usually i would get a 500-520 range. My strongest was CR and W. I would get in the range for 600-650 for CR and 610-700 for W. I guess on the TEST DAY I flipped out. I usually am like this for all exams. I thought I was going to do ok but I did not.

I received a total of 1530 by getting a MATH: 440 CR: 540 W:550 and a 9 on the essay.I know this is terrible but I was SHOCKED. I knew I would do poorly in math but knew I could get at least a 500 or 510 since all my practice tests were showing that. I was confident for CR and W. I can't believe I got these scores.

I've been practicing over the summer and these are the test scores from my practice book. I am using Kaplan and the Blue book from Collegeboard.I have been studying everyday for math so I have seen a huge increase in my score.

TEST 1: M:600 CR:670 W:670
TEST 2: M:620 CR:630 W:650
TEST 3: M: 620 CR: 620 W:690
TEST 4: M:700 CR: 620 W:630
TEST 5: M:700 CR:610 W:620
TEST 6: M:630 CR:630 W:600

WHAT DO I DO? I know that there is no point of me doing well on these practice exams if I DO NOT DO WELL ON THE REAL SAT ON OCTOBER!!! DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM???!

Look at what problems you got wrong. You can’t just take practice exams over and over while expecting to improve. Review the basic skills you may be forgetting, try to pick out patterns in your wrong answers. Practice, practice, practice (although you’re already doing that!)

I recommend Grubers for math study and the Blue Book for practice tests.

Good luck!

Learn grammar rules for W and check out RR/grammatix/7 deadly errors from sparknotes

Read more for CR and buy direct hits for vocab.

REVIEW. Blind test taking is just a waste of time

read more for CR? The guy’s applying to colleges soon and probably has 1-2 SAT dates left and a bunch of other work. Cramming literature probably isn’t the best option at the moment. Review notecards for vocab. Definately review though. Some books have concise reviews.

He may not have time for it but there’s no other way to improve critical reading besides TO READ…also, reading for enjoyment isn’t unheard of.

It’s not like math or writing. Besides the sentence completions, there isn’t anything for him to review.

“He may not have time for it but there’s no other way to improve critical reading besides TO READ” - that is the most brash and incorrect comment I’ve seen so far on this website

I scored a hundreds points lower on the actual SAT than I did on collegeboard practice exams too and am also planning on retaking the test in Oct, so you’re not the only one, skim92:)

actually, :(

Taking the practice exams is only part of what you need to do. One of the MOST important ways to improve your scores is to read the explanation about why answer A is correct and answer B is incorrect. Don’t just take test after test after test. You could be making the same mistake and not know why. I never thought my son is a real “math” guy, but he got 800 by reading the explanations about why one answer is right and others are wrong. Good luck!

Do the practice problems then review what you got wrong. If you find a trend, ie-lot of geometry questions wrong on the math section, review geometry. Concentrate on those areas you need the most help. College Board gives some direction on this on their web site. Go back to the last SAT you took and see where college board thinks you need more review.

when I took the real SAT’s I did much better than I had ever been doing on the practice tests…so basically the opposite of what happened to you! I think i was just really relaxed, confident, and got a great sleep the night before. Just keep doing what youre doing and be super relaxed on the day of the test! goooood luck!
