I've kinda procrastinated the essay because I can't find anything to write about, but now I'm buckling down and trying to get it done. The idea I currently have now is to write about my job as a busser at a restaurant. I'm planning on focusing on how I used to love to go out to eat, and was fascinated by how the food just magically appeared on my plates and now I understand the process that must be gone through in order for that to happen.

I spend a lot of time at my job, and I definitely want to elaborate on it somewhere in my application, but is this a good way to do it? Is this a good choice for my essay?

I feel like this would be an essay better located in the “expand on one of your extracurriculars” section of the writing in the common app. From your summary, the essay seems like it wouldn’t reveal very much about your personality unless you related something else into it as well. Remember that your essay is the only way colleges will really get to know you, so try to find something that shows off some of your best qualities while also allowing you to write in an interesting way. I’m not sure that this topic would really allow you to show much more than just how your job affected the way you perceive restaurants (though again that would make a great short essay in the other part of the writing section!)

I like the idea of how working in a restaurant changed your perspective. You could talk about team work, cultural differences (learning a different language if needed), the climate of good service (smiling and offering your help even when you don’t feel like it), working for (and sharing) tips and the need to earn an income of your own. This topic could be excellent. What makes or breaks it is the writing and the revealing of self that comes through in your unique voice.
