Does UC Berkeley allow deferred admission to a later year?

I would like to take a gap year for some very strong reasons. I've been looking all over the website and I haven't been able to find anything. Does anybody have a link?

Bump…

Nope…

not really. only way to do this is to SIR, then withdraw and apply for readmission for the next semester or fall - there may be a limit on how far forward you can be readmitted.

you would be re-evaluated as a new applicant, not guaranteed a spot.

Readmission is something definitely available to existing students, who want to take some time off, but that would be after having one or more semesters completed.

If reapplying, you can’t have taken any college courses while off or you become a transfer applicant, which forces you to applying when a sophomore.

You could contact the admissions office and see if you can negotiate it, but they would need to agree. More here [Cancellation, Withdrawal and Readmission - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/prospective_students/registration_enrollment/canwd.html)

If you believe you were a borderline admission, it is risky to try to withdraw. If you feel you are a strong candidate that the school would want to hang on to, then you should have a decent chance with admissions. Right now, they are being deluged with appeals and other pressure, so keep that in mind when asking about a deferral.

“If you are a new undergraduate student and would like to defer your admission to another term, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. If you wish to cancel or withdraw, please contact your college before canceling or withdrawing. If you cancel your registration, you will be required to submit a new admission application to attend a future semester.”

So yeah, it looks pretty positive. I would just be ready with your reasons for deferring, and convey them clearly and confidently. They’re not out to get you.

you do realize that this is a two-year old thread, and the OP is likely half-way to graduation?
