Does Uchicago financial aid practices the frontloading of grants?

UChicago Junior and Senior and Parents,

Did you receive in grants start to decrease after freshman year? how your junior and senior year grants compared to their freshman year grants? Please advise!

Hello @Cding2014, we assure you that students’ financial aid awards will remain the same should your family income remain the same from year to year. So, unless your family income increases, the student should be provided with the same type of aid each year, although we will ask you to reapply for aid each year to account for any changes in your income and changes in our cost. Please feel free to call our financial aid office or email them at college-aid@uchicago.edu if you have any questions.

Our son is finishing his third year and financial aid covers about 75% of his tuition. He received a Dean’s Grant and the rest of the aid is need-based. The aid package has remained consistent each year. The financial aid package doesn’t arrive until mid-summer or so for their second, third and fourth years, so that produces some anxiety, but the fact that it has remained steady each year has reduced that concern.

We have had mixed experience getting aid from uchicago - mostly positive. Financial aid our son got when he entered college was a combination of guaranteed merit scholarship and grant. For the second year they cut the grant portion to almost nothing. To put it mildly, we were a bit surprised by this. There was no increase in family income and EFC had gone down with our second son deciding to go to college. There was no grant for the third year and we had nothing to complain - our income had gone up by ~15%. It was a pleasant surprise when we got the bill for q1/4th year. They offered a grant that was significantly more than they had offered for the first year. It didn’t make sense at all - our family income had gone up by another 20% or so.

Thank you all for your information! They are very helpful! indeed.

Hi UWHuskyDad,

Did you write an appeal letter to finical aid office after receiving the no grant the second year? What did they say? What was their reasoning for no grant?

@sukahjoy, yes we did. The answer we got was that the amount awarded in the form of grant at the time admission is not a commitment for all four years unlike the merit scholarship. They didn’t give any specific reason and we didn’t push too hard. My guess is their priority is to give the grants to admitted students rather than returning students.
