Does UChicago normally allow people to take a gap year off the waitlist?

I was just wondering if it is very selective of who they allow to take the gap year or will they allow anyone that is really interested in UChicago to take that gap year? Just wondering if anyone has gotten denied from taking the gap year?

Are you currently admitted or on the waitlist?

I’m currently on the waitlist

OK. Here is the recent thread that explores that topic. From what I can surmise, there is no guarantee of admission and you have to take a meaningful gap year. Sounds like an interesting option, though.

I know one person who got in this way. This student told them he would be willing to take a gap year. As far as I can tell, the only requirement was that you not enroll in any college. Other than that, you could pound sand if that is what you wanted to do. Most students of course will want to make good use of the year, but I think the College doesn’t really judge your gap year. You could go on a mediation retreat to discover yourself, if that is what interests you.

Remember, it is a great way for them to prefill the next year’s class. I have a feeling given the 10% drop in apps this year, there will be a lot of gap years offered to juice next year’s numbers, but that is just my speculation. I could be totally off.

Could you possibly go more in depth with your speculation?

@denydenzig and @Cobra7 the math doesn’t work here, a 10% drop off is 3000 apps. How many gap year admissions could you offer to “juice” the numbers, nothing close to 3K that’s for sure. Lets go out on a limb and say 100 which I think is way high, that amounts to a .3% addition, not statistically significant.
