Does USC have any active outdoor/ outing clubs?

Hi -- My daughter is a HS senior who has applied to USC and many other schools. As she awaits the decisions, we are having fun looking at the websites of the various colleges together and thinking about activities that she might want to get involved in. Many schools have a rich offering of outdoor adventure trips that students can sign up for -- e.g., weekend sea kayaking or backpacking trips, day hikes, and the like. Some schools have trips for small groups of incoming freshmen before school starts, which seems like a great way to get to know a few classmates before the beginning of the semester.

Does anyone know if USC has any groups or clubs that plan outdoor outings? We couldn't find any on the website. I know there is an outdoors floor in one of the dorms, but my daughter was worried that the activities of a specially dedicated floor might be too advanced. She's looking for beginning-to-intermediate-type trips, not serious rock climbing and the like. She'd also be interested in hearing about cultural outing groups/ clubs.

And, yes, we know that she might not get in, but it is fun to think ahead!

Thanks!

USC has 762 student organizations currently. There are many related to sports or outdoor activities. Check out the list here:

Click search without entering any search identifiers to see the entire list but the “type” you are most likely looking for is recreational. Many student orgs will have facebook pages as well to look at.

nottlling, My son belonged to SCoutfitters and had a great time on the camping and hiking trips he went on. [SC Outfitters](http://scoutfitters.org/)

SC Outfitters is great! My son just went with them to Sequoia and loved it. He is reasonably fit, but certainly had never worn snowshoes before.

USC is located where outdoor activities can take place all year. Here is a just a sample of some of the outdoor clubs available and some indoor choices:

Keck School has an assorment of athletic clubs as does Marshall

In addition to the above there are club sports at SC. They are in leagues, wear SC uniforms and play against other schools, but at a much more informal level. There is Club Baseball, Golf, Softball, Tennis, Basketball and Running that I know are active.

Many students take advantage of the USC boat that sails to Catalina Island. Qualified student scuba divers can check out equipment and spend the day diving near the USC Catalina Island marine science center.

To address your daughter’s interest in exploring cultural events, I’d like to mention that USC sponsors an amazing arts and humanities initiative called Visions & Voices that provides a broad variety of programming several times per WEEK absolutely free to students. Many of the events involve visiting artists who perform on campus, but several involve trips to various cultural sites around Los Angeles to see top entertainment/art. All these trips include free round trip private bus transportation from campus and even free boxed meals. They do, however, require RSVP to sign up for tickets. Some recent examples include trips to see: “Book of Mormon,” A tour of Art Deco theatres in downtown L.A., and an evening visit to the L.A. Art Walk (all local art galleries open).
