New to USC

Hello Everyone,

I am new in the area and would like to make some friends. Where do most of the students go on friday/saturday night? Is there anything fun to do on weekends?

USC is located in one of the country’s most cosmopolitan cities. Mild weather means the weekends can be opportunities to visit the beaches, desert and mountains. Los Angeles is the home of the Music Center, Performing Arts Center, Disney Concert Hall, museums, art galleries, libraries, California Science Center, theatres, LA LIVE complex and professional sport complexes. Downtown cultural events can be accessed by using one of the two metro stations located at the edges of campus.

Students can rent a car or go with friends to Magic Mountain, Knotts, Universal Studios and Disneyland. A drive away is the superb Huntington Library and gardens, Getty Museum, Norton Simon Museum,
Mt. Wilson Observatory, Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles Arboretum and the Los Angeles Zoo.

On campus the residential colleges have professors who offer programs with speakers, short trips, lectures, films and social gatherings. The schools of music, dramatic arts, cinema and fine arts provide concerts, plays, opera, film previews and art exhibits. There are over 80 religious organizations and 600 clubs. Also available are academic organizations in each of SC’s schools. Well over half of SC students actively participate in community service projects or organizations.

There are over 21 D-1 teams, if you enjoy sports. Club sports and intramural are offered from basketball to soccer. Visions & Voices provide unique artistic/musical and cultural experiences.

These are just a few of the entertainment, cultural, sports choices available to students.

Unique to SC is the opportunity to take the SC boat to Catalina Isand and visit the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center located there. Diving gear is available to check out for qualified divers.

Another special experience is a visit to the historic Gamble House in Pasadena, CA designed by Greene & Greene. The USC School of Architecture helps preserve the house for future generations.

wow Thanks Georgia Girl!

Like most universities diving under the auspices of USC is possible only for American Academy of Underwater Sciences scientific divers. The good news is that the USC Environmental Studies Program has a large undergraduate focused science diving program. In fact 26 undergraduates are in route to Guam at this moment to participate in the 2013 Guam and Palau expedition. The next opportunity for USC undergraduates to enter the science diving program and hence to be able to dive at USC facilities is the spring 2014 Catalina Sustainability Semester.

Calamitous,
