I've been using a (good) school viola for awhile now and I might not be able to buy one of my own before I go off to college. Does Yale (or someplace in New Haven) have a place where I can rent out a viola to use during the year?

I know the band rents out stuff but I don’t know about strings. You could call the music school or check their site.

Not sure about viola, but I heard from my child that he could rent a violin from the following store, which is within walking distance from Yale. The price seems to be reasonable.

Neighborhood Music Center
100 Audubon St, New Haven, CT - (203) 624-5189

I know it is painful to take your instrument to the school. Been there, done that.

I believe that they also have all kinds of music lessons for children. (I know you are not a child anymore But many classical music activities may involve children and parents. At one time. my child ran into his professor who took his D there for either music or ballet lesson.)

It is Neighborhood Music School, not Neighborhood Music Center.

They have string instruments available for rental:

Do I need to own an instrument?
For students who do not own an instrument, NMS has a wide assortment of string instruments and a limited selection of wind and brass instruments available for rental. Pianos are available on-site for limited student use. NMS staff can provide information on rental or purchase of alternative instruments, please call our office for details.

They do have viola teachers:

Neighborhood Music School is in a nice neighborhood, adjacent to the building where Yale’s UCS is at. (Does UCS stand for University Career Center?)

^I take piano lessons there (and used to be in their youth symphony). The Neighborhood Music School definitely has a fabulous music program; youth orchestras and ensembles, even art, dance, and daycare. It’s on Audubon, very artsy for youngsters (also, the Educational Center for the Arts is there for high schoolers) and there’s a cozy cafe too!
Lots of Yale Music School alumni in the faculty. I’m sure you’ll find them reliable for renting info. I hope I gave you a good context for what it’s like!
