Yale School of Music

Posting here for the very knowledgeable group on this forum....
Son will apply for graduate performance program at Yale (and others).
He understands that the competition will be high for admittance but the lure of full paid tuition is huge.

Any first (or second) hand info on the Yale grad program?
He understands that many of the faculty are the same as at the NYC schools.

Thanks in advance.

musicmom- My son is seriously considering Yale as well for grad viola performance. He's played with a number of current and former grad students, largely at festivals or summer programs, and a few string players recreationally or for local gigs. He consistent praises the extremely high level of musicianship he's seen with the Yale students.

Sospiro Winds, a Yale grad woodwind quintet took second place in this year's Fischoff Competition. The Vinca String Quartet, formed at Yale, also has a Fischoff 3rd from a year or three ago, a few other competition wins and placements, and were fellows last month at Emerson Quartet's professional string quartet program at Carnegie Hall. (I had the pleasure of seeing them perform at Weill; they were mesmerizing.)

There's a number of faculty that do indeed share committments with the NYC schools.

My son has performed a couple of times at Woolsey Hall. A magnificent stone edifice, it's got great acoustics but unfortunately does not have AC. If the house is packed, it can be unbearable. Other than Woolsey, he can't comment on the other facilities.

He loves the campus and the area. Parking is at a premium.

He plans a visit and a lesson with Jesse Levine in the early fall.

The full tuition aspects makes it very attractive. The level of competition is extremely high.

Good luck to your son.

Thanks for the quick feedback.
Wonderful that your son has had the opportunity to play with current Yale students and perform at Woolsey (even with no AC!)
Will surely add to his comfort level while auditioning.

Our son refuses to investigate schools outside of east coast. This is where 'everything' is to him. Of course, the highest competition is here also!
His list of schools is pretty daunting to me. Don't really know what his "Plan B" would be.....
He has had opportunities to play with MSM students and the NY Youth Symphony at Carnegie. His brain is definetely NYCccentric.

Had to laugh when he asked me "exactly what city is Yale in"? Sigh.

Best of luck to your son also.
