Does your CC matter?

Are some community colleges "better" than others? Does which cc you go to affect where you can transfer to?

Just curious because I'm deciding between a community college near my house and one that is farther away but supposedly has a better reputation. That said, they both have TAP and honors programs. Is there a difference?

you should probably go to the better one -- it can make a difference.

Which CCC's are you deciding between?

It apparently does. Try going to one with an honors program and that offers a variety of classes :(

Santa Monica College is one of the best community colleges. It has an honors program that will defnitely help you get into top tier ucs.

speaking of santa monica...are their admission requirements strict? i am an international student.

im currently considering SMC, and other CCCs in that area like...pierce college, glendale CC, LACC, long beach CC, el camino...how are all of those?

I went to one thats farther away and I don't regret it a single bit. It's more rigorous and its honors program and personal statement class/workshop facilitates the application process. Results? I've gotten into all the schools I've applied to. Could be just me, but we'll never know.

I'm deciding between Skyline and Foothill. Skyline is pretty close to where I live, but Foothill is quite a distance and transportation would be extremely probelmatic. However, it seems to have a better reputation. That said they both have TAP and honors programs.
However, I talked to counselors at both schools on the phone, and the Foothill people seemed more...intelligent. When I called Skyline however:

"So do you participate in the UCLA TAP program?"
"Ummm...Tap? Like Tap dancing?"

Yeah, if all the skyline counselors are that clueless, I don't know if thats where I wanna go.
Anyone who is from the bay area and is familiar with these schools, which do you think is better?

SMC honors program is very promising.
In the past years, almost everyone out of 200 or so honors students got into UCLA.

top admits to UCLA come from SMC and PCC, both have good TAP programs and are close to UCLA

SMC's tap/scholar's program is great...but then again i didn't do TAP at SMC and i got into UCLA/UC Berkeley/UCSB and am waiting to hear from USC, and i know several people who this year did NOT do TAP and got into UCLA, but SMC is a great CCC.

loathed-i'm not sure about international, but i was out-of-state when i first started (i've lived in california since i was 17 and i'm 21 now) and they were not strict at ALL. i think if you're looking for a good CCC in the LA area, the order would be SMC, PCC, el camino, pierce, and then the rest of them.

To be honest, if the close one offers enough classes, has a good schedule and TAP, I would just go there.

you're location lists the bay area so you have two EXCELLENT cc's near you:

De Anza College & Foothill College

If you want to be TAP certified, go to foothill--De Anza doesn't offer TAP certification (yet).

I've attended both schools and I have to say that I really enjoyed my time at both.

hey! foothill is one of the cc's I was considering. It's kinda far, but if it will get me into college then I guess it's worth it.

where exactly is de anza?

De Anza is in cupertino.

If you're going south to get to either of those schools, De Anza is closer.

Definitely check out both! Feel free to ask any other questions about either school in this thread as well!

I am planning on attending Foothill this fall. I literally live like 15 minute walking distance from De Anza, but I'm choosing Foothill due to TAP. Foothill is like 10 min driving distance from my house so its not too bad.

If both the schools you are considering have TAP, i would just go to the one closer. I don't think it will really make a difference.

De Anza Vs. Foothill

I would say both are pretty much the same in terms of quality of education. I love the foothill campus though, its way better than De Anza's. Also the student body is much more diverse at foothill, De Anza has too many fobby asians (im asian).

I went to the Day on Hill Conference which is for high school seniors held by foothill. I was really impressed with the staff. They seemed to be really welcoming and helpful, I think its because they are trying to compete with De Anza. Both CC's are great and among the top in the state, visit both and decide for yourself.

Ohhh this great info.

Anyone ever heard of San Diego Mesa College? And if so, anyone ever heard of anyone from there transfer over to a UC?

It has an honors program and TAP, TAG with UCLA, UCSD, and UCR.

I'm sure someone has transfered from san diego mesa college...

Does anybody know anything about Skyline?? I don't know how great it is...but its close and it has TAP.
Has anyone on here transferred from/goes to skyline??

From UCLA's data (they're the only school that publishes a lot of data)
from Skyline:

44 applied

23 accepted

52.27% acceptance rate

I'd interpret that as being pretty solid
