Does your Dorm roommate have to be a student?

The school (out of state) I’m looking at requires freshman to live on campus, but my sister wants to move out with me, is it possible we could dorm together even though she won’t be attending that college, or do we have to live off campus? What about campus affiliated housing?

Check the school, but I highly doubt that the school will allow non-students to live in the on-campus dorms. The only situation I can think of where non-students can live on campus might be in situations where there is family housing (for married couples with kids) available. She’ll likely have to live off campus. You may be able to get an exemption from having to live on campus so that you can live off campus with your sister, but you have to check with the school.

I doubt very much that it will be allowed.

For starters, I imagine the school’s insurance would mandate that anyone living in a dorm be a student.

Secondly, the primary hold that a school has over behavior (and I’m talking the really bad stuff here) is expulsion. If they open up school housing to non-students, they lose that leverage.

Thirdly, in many schools, housing is tight to begin with. They won’t be quick to give away a spot to someone from whom they’re not getting tuition.

My guess is that you’ll need to look at off campus housing as a Sophomore.
