Does your gender/race matter if you're an engineering applicant?

Some people have told me I have a much greater chance if I apply to Engineering only since I’m a girl (but Asian). I want to double major in Econ and Bioeng. so I was thinking of applying to weinberg first…

Is there really a advantage of any sort?

I don’t think anyone can confirm or deny any sort of affirmative action by gender/race, but I’d take it all with a grain of salt. Overall, everyone’s application is judged more by academic achievement than something as trivial as just race or gender. I doubt it would really have any impact on your application unless you are truly borderline where any one benefit or con could sway you towards an admission or rejection. When you apply to NU the acceptance process is for getting into NU in general, and not a specific school (except maybe Benien for Music) so essentially Weinberg and McCormick applicants are treated to same which increases my doubt the gender/race matters in the application process for a specific major. The school you apply to on the Common App becomes your “home school” (which you can always change later if you double majoring across schools) and its the one you have to write your “Why NU?” essay about so really you should just apply to whatever school you feel you could write a stronger and more truthful essay about. Also its worth taking into account what potential major/school is best supported by your current extracurricular interests and HS course selection. Good Luck!
