As I was working on my roommate essay, I began wondering this. Of course I want to write something my roommate would enjoy reading, but do they send these letters to our roommates when housing is decided?

They don’t, unfortunately. or fortunately, depending on how embarassing your essay is ;)

Awww, I was hoping. I like mine so far, and I’d love to read theirs haha. Do they use them at all to assign roommates compatibly? Is it random? Or do you find your own roommate? How does that all work?

I’m pretty sure that the roommate essay is only meant to get the best possible interpretation of you as a person. The other suppl. are much more serious content-wise IMHO. They want to see you in your normal mode. Of course it can be serious, but the admissions people want to see something about you that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with academics or intellectual vitality. They want to see how you would fit with everyone else as a community.

This summer, you get housing forms to fill out. Part of that is a description of your ideal living space and what kinds of things you look for in a roommate. The housing people match you up with people based on compatibility and lack, thereof. Be as real and genuine as possible or else you can really get screwed with roommate selections.

I’ve read my roommate’s roommate essay. You just have to ask or bring it up or something but most people will probably be really shy about it.

There’s a thread in the official Facebook group going on where people are sharing their roommate letters, so I’m sure there are people who aren’t afraid to show them anyways.

Cool, thanks for the info! Not that I’ll likely get in, but we’ll see.
