Doing bad. Really. Really. REALLY BAD. Can I still go to med school? (need advice)

i agree with prism there, how are you pulling off Cs and Ds with indian parents?

i'll just reiterate that there's no shot at an Ivy for you, i had a near 95 out of 100 GPA, lots of ECs, 2260 SATs and all i got was waitlisted at an ivy, so you should let that notion go because it's not worth fussing over. you have to focus on your task at hand right now, which is to start getting your ***** together, not just for straight As now, but for viability in college. especially when you're going pre-med, you're going to be worked to the bone and your performance thus far is not conducive to surviving in that sort of dog-eat-dog atmosphere. you say that you were failing because you didn't hand in homework...excuses like that aren't going to bail you out of anything.

the only reason i'm being harsh is because i hate seeing someone aiming so high but not being able to back it up. you have to build up a great deal of perseverance, sensibility, and understanding to make it through the whirlwind that is pre-med. and you have to start now and focus on what you can do now.

we can only say so much before you realize that this is up to you. good luck kid.

high school, college, and medical school have a GREAT differnce. As you get older you get more mature and knowledgeable. maybe you havent discoverd you're worth ethic yet, but if you really wanna be a doctor, you have to discover it soon enough.

i dont know why u get the grades u do. start getting serious about your ed. and u'll do fine

this is kinda funny. the topic starter seems so desperate for our approval, lol going on and on about how hes going to change his life like a crackhead going to rehab jk jk...but yea don't worry. its america, you'll get a second chance to prove yourself in college, where it really matters.

and sorry buddy, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

you can't slack off and point the middle finger to homework, and still set goals of getting into an ivy.

just get straight A's starting now. its a lot easier said than tdone but good luck = )

I agree with Prism...Desis are kinda supposed to be good at school..kinda....what state do you live in? For example if its X apply to "X State University"..you stand somewhat of a chance there. Unless its penn or michigan.

The people on this website place way too much importance on prestige...

Also Wash U is the exception, not the rule, when it comes to everything about applying to Medical school. The average MCAT score of their entering class every year is about a 36, which is ridiculous. They care way more about improving their numbers. AND, most of their grads are going to do research rather than be an actual MD like you commonly think. Their #4 in research and not even in the top 50 for primary care (which are the schools who actually produce successful practicing physicians.)

Just go to wherever and do well there and you'll be competitive for acceptance in 4-5 years at a medical school somewhere.

It’s good and all that you going into med, I am personally doing the same. If you are actually serious then you should do extensive research, just asking people on here isn’t going to help much. Also, like you said that you might switch to computers, well that for the most part should be no. At this point in high school you need to take classes to prepare for college level math, biology, and chemistry (Psych and Sociology should help too) which would be pre-med.

@ppatel12, these posts are from 2006. Does anyone have an update on averagedesi?

Lol ik this has been said but jeez how are you getting away with this with Indian parents?! My parents freak out over A- 's… Anyways forget going to any ‘good’ colleges and stop thinking you’re gonna ace everything in college cause chances are you’re gonna do worse. Try to focus on doing better in high school?

It seems like his Junior Year grades did not pick up AT ALL as he promised. Darn, I was hoping for a bright future for him after reading this.

He posted it in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/illinois-institute-technology/370896-attention-iit-students-do-i-have-chance-here-my-stats.html

And in another post he says he is probably attending Illinois State University.

You know there are people who have 4.0 GPA with 2400 SAT scores and still don’t get into Ivy League schools. Your GPA does play a large role in what college you may get into in the future, so you should try your best to bring it up. I don’t know about your state, but my state allows us to retake classes that we may have failed in the previous years online so that will help A LOT if you could do that.

I would say that you would have a chance but it won’t be too great of one. You really have to get that GPA up.

Wow. People here simply overlook the redeeming power of community college for students with a less than ideal high school career. It’s a shame, really. I’m typing this from my room at UC Berkeley, where I transferred from community college. I have a friend who transferred to StanFUrd (boooooooo) and another who was accepted to Cornell (she chose UCLA instead). None of us had a prayer at these universities out of high school.
