Doing very badly in school, but want to try top schools! (Will Chance Back!)

@WhiteTopaz Thanks!

@Muhammad9211 Thanks for the assurance! I just met up with a school teacher and he told me something similar too. :)

shameless bump!

Bbbbbbump!

Your GPA will only be a problem if you’re doing bad compared to other students at your school. Is that the case?

Students often think that having an app with a GPA of 4.0 is stronger than an app with a GPA of 3.5, but they don’t know that admissions officers don’t just look at the number. They look at data from your school and they want to know how rigorous your schedule was and how well you did in the context of your school. If a student gets a 4.0, but everyone gets 4.0, then they won’t be as impressed as with the student who gets a 3.5 at a very rigorous school in which nobody gets a 4.0. That’s also why they ask for test scores, since grading is very different from school to school. If your school system is designed so the top students get close to 3.0, not 4.0, then the admissions officers will know about it, but you’re in trouble if there are a lot of students who did manage the equivalent of 4.0 (in which case they might think you’re lazy because you’re got bad grades and great test scores).

I think you’re really good!! You have good ec’s and good acads. I heard that US schools like Singaporeans (to a certain extent) because shamelessly SGreans are pretty motivated and awesome :slight_smile: so being international in this case isn’t that big a minus. Anyway, your school’s students (whether u r from rj or hci) are accepted into the ivies by the masses anyway. Why don’t you check with your seniors? They should know better than CC-ers in this case.

All of those schools are low reach-match imo except Yale and UCB. I heard UCB loves good grades and you’d probably have to get straight A’s throughout your jc years. Yale would be a reach-high reach obviously.

Very little chance.

Little chance even for Cal Poly?

Bump Bump, :(

Your main killer is definitely your GPA, as many have told you. As an international student, you are competing against some of the most competitive applicants in the world. Since, however, the grading system is unfamiliar, I would try to ask your GC how many people from your school have gotten into the schools on your list with a similar GPA. Your ECs are great, however, and so are your test scores. It is a bit hard to chance you, given the unfamiliarity of the system, but I think that if you make your essays stand out, your chances will definitely be elevated. Good luck!!

Chance me back please? Thanks! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1527858-chance-me-harvard-yale-etc-will-chance-back-2.html

I also have a small Visual Arts portfolio that consists of slightly less than 10 artworks.

Should I submit them?
