Don’t get to live in dorms??

Hi! This is my first post on CC so I’m sorry if it’s kind of a mess. I’m in a bit of a bind and could use some advice.

I’ll be starting my freshman year in the fall and was super excited to get to live in the honors dorms with my friend. Huge room, 12 foot ceilings, our own private bathroom, two closets, it was great. Until I was informed, on May 2, that I wasn’t even a resident.

I applied to this school at an open house, mostly to waive the app fee and to get the free pop socket they were giving out if you applied. I was sitting in the middle of the gym rushing to fill it out with my mom. I must have put down commuter, since I live 20 min away and didn’t even know about the honors program or their dorms. I filled it out to fill it out. And, May me didn’t know that November me put down commuter.

I deposit on Feb. 26 and I immediately text my admin counselor about honors housing. He says as long as I put down my deposit (not housing, just deposit) and sent in my honors acceptance letter that I had a spot reserved. February me had completely forgotten about commuter status.

April comes and I go to accepted students day. Later that same day, I confirm with my admin counselor about honors housing. He tells me the same thing.

May 1 comes and I ask why I haven’t gotten any housing contract forms. He then tells me that I am a commuter and that, even though I asked him about living on campus, that he wasn’t officially notified and therefore never changed my status.

So now I’m on a waiting list for that dream dorm. I’m not really into the whole tiny dorm + communal bathroom situation, so I’ll end up commuting unless 3 people drop out of the honors dorm.

Is there anything I can do or is my fate sealed? We’re already in touch w the dean of admin and the head of housing but so far no answers. Will commuting suck as much as I think it will? Am I really not going to have friends or date or anything? Is it going to be like high school 2.0?

Sorry this is so long, I’d appreciate all the advice I can get

I think it might be time to get your parents involved. They are paying after all. I’d be contacting the Dean of Res Life and Housing, if they are different people.

Yes, you should live on campus. It’s not so bad being in a traditional dorm. That’s what works for the vast majority of students. You will miss out on a lot of the traditional college experieince otherwise. If that’s more important to you than the dream room, you just have to deal with it for a year. It was your mistake, msorry to say, so now it’s your choice.
