Don't Forget to Apply to a "Safety" College

There’s also a whole controversy on Long Island as every kid with a 90+ applies to Binghamton as a safety and take Bing away from B+ students who legitimately want to go there as a match school

Would anyone agree that a good prediction of getting into a particular college would be :

If you are in the 75th percentile of stats of accepted students, and the university has a 50% + admission rate

Probably, but check carefully. Some “safeties” have been known to deny admission to students who are just using it as a safety, in order to protect their yield. That’s one reason why state schools make such good safeties; except for a handful of selective flagships, they tend to be pretty stats-driven for in-state students, so there’s a pretty small chance of this happening. They’re also more likely to be affordable.

Look up admittance percentage rates on websites such as bigfuture.collegeboard.com. You can find which schools are safety schools and which aren’t.

I’ve been reading that a safety isn’t really safe unless you can get a guaranteed admission. Can anyone point to any schools in CA that do guarantee admission with certain GPAs or SAT scores?

@ucbalumnus:

My D is in private school, and I have been told that the UC guarantee for the top students only applies to kids in public CA HS (or I would feel more confident with UCSC or UCM). Was that not correct information?

ETA – looks like that is “Local Path” vs Statewide Path…

Are there any “safety schools” for people with a GPA of 3 or lower…? (besides community college)

Even if you really think you’ll get into a good school, safety schools are important. I have a friend who didn’t apply to ANY safety schools, and got waitlisted or rejected everywhere she applied. Now she’s waiting to either go somewhere or reapply next semester or next year.
This can and does happen, so prepare yourself, and don’t assume you’ll get into a good school just because of your academic stats. Make backup plans!

Mamabear16, all Cal State University campuses use the eligibility index as part of the freshman admission decision. The eligibility index is a combination of a student’s high school grade point average and SAT/ACT test scores (excludes Writing section).

[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - Eligibility Index](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>http://www.csumentor.edu/planning/high_school/eligibility_index.asp)

Here is the CSU Local Admission Areas for each campus: http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf</a></p>

For UCs, “If you rank in the top 9 percent of students in your California high school class — and your high school participates in the ELC program — you may be eligible for ELC designation…ELC students not admitted to any of their campus choices are offered a spot at a UC campus that has space, if minimum UC requirements are me.”

Krlilies – thanks so much for the links – it was just what I was looking for :)

I have a dilemma, what if the student hates all of the safeties that they have visited? Then what? Is there a solution to this?

Can you find a new safety? (Easier said than done, I know.) If there are any guarenteed merits at small private schools, those might work? Honors college at a branch public?

NewHaven, try to find a lemonade among those “lemons”.

Thank you is for your responses! Well try to figure out how to make some lemonade…seeing that as we arrived at her last safety, she refused to get out of the car! :). She is a girl who knows what she likes and what she doesn’t! This is going to get very interesting.

If you have a lot of APs and adv classes, will a low GPA be okay? 11 APs before Junior year, 3.4 GPA Looking at schools like USC.

Goodluck NewHaven!

fullmetal27, here is the USC freshman profile for Fall 2012. http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/1213/USCFreshmanProfile2012.pdf</a></p>

Can your parents afford USC’s Cost of Attendance? Remember, when we say safety it is both academic and financial safety.

Even though you have a lower GPA for taking AP’s, it brings more strength to your transcript with the AP’s on there. The GPA is calculated differently for every high school so don’t focus as much on the GPA as specifically on how you did in the individual classes.

USC is a tough school to get into but without knowing much about your profile, it appears you should consider it a reach and make sure your list of schools is balanced with more “target/safety” schools.

Iowa!!!

Make sure you love thy safety, and its stats are all significantly below yours. For example, I have a 4.3w and a 2250 SAT, so a college with an average of 3.8 and 1900 SAT would be a safety (especially schools that admit almost solely on stats). In my personal case, I’m hoping for some of the elites and applying to many of them. But I’m also being realistic and applying to UCSD, UCLA, UCSB, and UCSC (as a californian, these are my safe, in state schools). You can see the rest of my app in my thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1508050-chances-science-undergrad.html#post15980727</a>), if you chance I’ll chance back. Best of luck everyone, you’ll be happy anywhere

Hey guys, if you have similar stats and want to share colleges, let me know what it is reasonable to consider.

Previous non selective high school gpa: 3.7
Second semester of junior year at prep school: 3.6 (Mccallie school for boys)
ACT: 30 (sophomore year, will retake)

Thanks, and feel free to give the most realistic answers you feel comfortable giving!

If someone hates all of the safeties they have looked at so far, it might be time to think outside the box and find safeties in parts of the country they hadn’t previously considered.
