Thanks for reading my post! Though its the third time i've posted it
So here are my stats :

Asian Female
Class of 2010
Transferred to USA in January 2009

Academics

GPA : 3.92/4.0 W (I couldn't take any APs because I transferred)
SAT : 1420 (terrible terrible, i will retake it in October or even December)
SAT II: French, Math II and Physics (will take it in November)
Honors : English Literature (11th grade)
Ranking : top 10ish over 150
School : Public

ECs

ECs : 5 years of piano, member of swimming team(2009), member of Asian Club, Book Club. (I know that membership in these clubs sounds very boring but these are the only ones that I know)
Talents/Abilities : Art (I have been drawing since 6 years old and it's my greatest passion)
Awards : Most Outstanding Student of Junior Class (received Harvard Prize Book of San Francisco), and Most Outstanding Student in Physics
Volunteering : 9 hours/week at the San Francisco Park Conservancy, 6 hours/week at the SF Food Bank(prepare food for the needless)

Senior Year

APS: Literature, Calculus BC, Physics BC, Art History, and French if I manage to find one in community college.

As you can see, my old school doesn't have clubs or any particular sports that could be in competition. Moreover, I wasn't at all prepared for our journey to America, so my application looks plain and dull. I know it's not an outstanding application, thus I really need help in finding the right college. I wanted some where to be in the East Coast and the West because of the favorable climate and great cities. I'm quite undecided about my major though I'm considering Visual Arts, Marketing or Business or even Ecological Studies.

College in Consideration :

University of Susquehanna
University of San Francisco
Drexel University
UC Davis
UC Irvine

1420 isn’t bad? unless thats out of 2400 which makes this a different case lol Try studying a little more for the SATs and you will deff get into a 4 year university. I’ve seen people with 900s on their SATs get into state colleges. I’m not familar with UC schools but why not try University of Pitt? or Fordham in NY?

@ UCBChemEGrad: yes, though I’ve been here for 6 months, I really want to get into 4 year private university with a full scholar ship so at least I won’t have to spend my parent’s money.

@ Cacciato: How can you get 900s on the SAT? currently searching for the colleges that you mentioned thanks :)

You should consider looking at one of the many test optional colleges. There are a large number of quality colleges that will look only at your GPA and EC’s which would benefit you since it would eliminate your weakness (SAT scores) and highlight your strengths. I don’t think she should get your hopes up for a full academic scholarship at this point, there are just too many qualified students with much higher credentials fighting for those scholarships. The list of test optional schools can be found at [The National Center for Fair & Open Testing | FairTest](http://www.fairtest.org).

One other thing, you are not “doomed” if you go to a community college. They are very cost effective and will alllow you to build your college credentials for eventual transfer to a college or university.

@ BobbyCT : I will consider some of the college mentioned in the website, though I will retake the SAT again(hoping that the score will raised) and boost up my personal statement.

@ Silverzc413: There was once a Kaplan teacher who came and gave us both SAT and ACT test to see which one we did better and it turns out my score was 21/36 which I assume is the equivalent to my 1420 in the SAT. Though, thanks for the advice.

there are many people who go from 20s to 30+. Same with the SAT, although it is harder to study in a short period of time. If you really want this, go to the library and borrow every single ACT/SAT book you can find (or buy them). Time yourself and do at least 1 test a day and go over each test in DETAIL. This allows you to get familiar with the test structure and find out what your strengths and weaknesses are. If you’re simply going to give up after 1 try, then nobody can help you. If you take this time during the summer and do as above, your scores will improve drastically.

I feel like you’d be a great candidate for top schools if you could increase your standardized test scores. Maybe take the ACT? I know many friends who performed poorly on the SAT but 30+ on the ACT.

Definitely try taking the ACT. One of my friends only got a 1490/2400 on his SAT, but got a 29 on his ACT, which is obviously much better. Good luck.

Occidental College and Pitzer may be good for you. Due to your interests, I’ll go out on a limb and suggest that you look at Cooper Union in NY City. You would need a great art portfolio to get in though. Tuition is free, but you have to pay room, board, and supplies. Alice Lloyd College and Berea College are also free. If you are a California resident, the public university system would be low cost for you. They may even cut you some slack on the SAT scores due to being in the US only a short time.

Thanks alememon, I just finish my summer school not quite a while ago for my two missing English credits. I’m also considering San Francisco State University as a safety.
