Dorm and financial aid

Hello, I am reposting this from another forum because I heard there is more traffic here.

I am going to a school that I am very excited about attending, but haven’t committed yet. As I am about to take the final step, I decided to read over every packet of information that I’ve received, and found out disheartening news: the fact that I HAVE to dorm for my freshman year, or else the scholarship that I’ve received will be revoked. This is exactly what it said:

“A student who does not live in the residence hall during their freshman year permanently forfeits scholarship eligibility. If a waiver is submitted by the student to the Housing Office petitioning to live off campus is approved, scholarship eligibility for this program is still forfeited.”

I cannot dorm because I have to take care of my mother who cannot live alone for health reasons. Without this scholarship, I cannot even dream of attending due to the costs. What should I do? Please help…

You need to contact the school Monday…first thing in the morning…and explain your situation. Maybe they will make an exception because of your family situation.

Since it sounds like you live close enough…can you and your parent both go to the school and inquire…take ALL documentation of why you MUST live at home.

Are there no other family relatives who could help out for your freshman year? If others can help out M-TH nights, perhaps you could be there over the weekend.

Is it a scholarship that covers room and board? If so, take it, take the dorm assignment and sleep at home.

If not, you’ll have to decide whether it is financially better to live at home and give up the scholarship. If the scholarships is for $30k and the dorm is $10k, it’s still worth it to pay for the dorm as you’ll get $120k over 4 years for the cost of the dorm for one year.

^^
Is right.

If your aid covers the cost of tuition, room, and board, then take the dorm and sleep at home.

However, it sounds like maybe the award may not be that generous.

How much is the tuition, room, board, books at this school?

How much is the award?

It sounds like perhaps you looked at the dollar amount and thought it could be applied for anything – tuition, fees, books, etc – rather than for specific items? Is that correct? If part of your scholarship was specifically for room and/or board, then you cannot re-assign it to cover other expenses and live at home.

Please talk with the school tomorrow!
